He looked down and Anabella’s eyes fluttered open. Coop leaned over, kissed her forehead, squeezed her hand, and pressed the call button. Anabella tried to sit up, but Coop pushed her shoulders back.

“They want you to lie back, sweetheart. Everything is okay. We have a doctor who has a lot of experience with injuries caused by explosions. She’s going to take good care of you.”

Anabella struggled and pushed at him. The nurse tried to intervene, and Anabella went wild, knocking her away.

“Enough, Anabella,” he said in his best Dom voice. They hadn’t been together all that long, but when he’d used it before she’d responded to it. That got her attention and she looked at him, large tears pooling in her eyes. He leaned down gently, cupping her head and wiping away her tears. “It’s all right, baby. Everyone else is fine.”

A pretty woman with an engaging smile entered the room in a lab coat, holding what Coop assumed was Anabella’s medical records.

“Mr. and Mrs. McCullough? I’m Dr. Emily Harlowe. I’m being placed in charge of your case. Mrs. McCullough, you’re at Community General and you’re going to be just fine—mainly because your husband is a former SEAL and not only got you here quickly, but knew enough to know you would need special treatment and then saw that you got it. He can be very persuasive.”

Anabella smiled. “He can be an intimidating sonofabitch when he wants something.”

Dr. Harlowe laughed. “That, too. I just hope if I ever find my own knight in shining white armor he looks like your husband and has the ability to take control of a situation.” The doctor leaned in conspiratorially. “I have to tell you, he’s quite the hunk and those of us so inclined appreciate the eye candy. Now if you could just persuade him…”

“I’m fine,” Cooper growled.

“So you keep telling everyone, but your sweater has all kinds of little cuts and there’s some blood stains around several of them. I tell you what, if you’ll let me take a look and patch you up, we can do it right here. You won’t have to leave her.” The doctor turned back to Anabella. “Seriously, former special ops guys are such a pain in the ass. Maybe if you ask him.”

“Coop, please? I’m not going to be able to rest and get well if I’m worried about you.”

He rolled his eyes. “Remember what I told you about trying to lead me around by my dick?”

“But it’s such a nice, big dick and works so well as a handle,” Anabella said sweetly, making the doctor laugh out loud.

“Can I take a look at your back?”

“Fine, but no tranquilizers or painkillers, and I’m not leaving this room.”

Dr. Harlowe gave him a jaunty salute. “Yes, sir. Orders received, sir.”

Coop shook his head but started to chuckle.

“You should sell tickets for this,” said Anabella. “If you think he’s sexy in a beat-up sweater, wait until you see his naked chest. Pecs to die for and abs that would make you cry.”

“Does he have those sexy hip notches?” the doctor asked, clearly enjoying herself at his expense.

“You bet he does, and I wasn’t kidding about the size of his cock.”

“Anabella,” he growled.

“What? The girl can’t be held responsible for all that she’s saying; she’s on painkillers.”

Anabella nodded. “What she said.”

“Be careful, baby, there will come a time in the not-too-distant future when your new buddy Dr. Harlowe won’t be around to save you.”

Anabella leaned forward, reaching out to him. “Who says I want to be saved? Kiss, please.”

He chuckled, unable to resist her, and leaned over to kiss her. “I love you.”

There; he’d said it. He hadn’t meant to, but it had just slipped out. If she got upset with him, he could always tell her it was for their cover as husband and wife or just lovers. He understood now that for him, at least, husband and wife had so much more meaning.

She looked up at him, beaming. “I love you, too.”

Dr. Harlowe excused herself and went and got what she needed to take care of the cuts to his back. He had downplayed the injuries, not truly trusting anybody with Anabella’s safety but himself or one of the other team leaders.

The doctor returned with the nurse and Coop took a seat on one of the stools the doctors used at bedside. The nurse gasped. He hadn’t thought it was that bad, but apparently, he was wrong. He gritted his teeth as the doctor extracted bits of debris from the explosion. Anabella took his hand and held it tight. There were only a few of the wounds she needed to suture.
