“Try and keep those clean,” said the doctor as she finished up, “but I think the worst part is going to be the tetanus shot. Maybe we should give the nurse a thrill and tell her it needs to be given in the buttocks.”

“He has buns of steel—you’d bend your needle,” quipped Anabella.

Before he could say much more to Anabella, there was another knock at the door and Pete, who was stationed outside, stuck his head in. “Two deputies to see you.”

“They need to give me a tetanus shot and then you can let them in.”

The nurse returned and Coop instructed her into which muscle she should give him a shot. Once that was accomplished, the nurse left the room. As she did so, at Coop’s request, she let Pete know the patients were ready.

“Do you always order medical staff and the local cops around?” Anabella asked.

“I do when they’re not getting the job done. How are you feeling?”

“I’m actually feeling better and better as the day wears on. How about you?”

He leaned over and kissed her. “Just a few more scars to add to the inventory, but if you’re fine, I’m more than fine.”

The deputies entered the room. Coop couldn’t help but wonder if one of them was the one who told Limp Dick where they were. And if they had told him, who else had they told?

“Mr. and Mrs. McCullough, we hope you’re feeling better. The sheriff is out on another case and asked us to come and speak with you. We have a few questions about what happened?”

Anabella and Cooper answered their questions. Anabella’s details were a bit sketchier than Coop’s as she had sustained a concussion. The deputies seemed satisfied with their answers and took their statements, as well as their general information for any kind of follow-up.

As they were leaving, Seth and King showed up.

“Mr. and Mrs. McCullough, huh? And you gave me shit about how fast I got a ring on Samantha’s finger.”

Anabella held up her hand. “I got cheated. I didn’t get a ring.”

“Yet, sweetheart. You didn’t get a ring, yet.”

“You should know that the FBI has gotten itself involved and has started an investigation. We’ve been told our services are no longer needed, that they will take Anabella into protective custody as a material witness and that Cerberus should stand down.”

“Like hell,” growled Coop. “That’s never been Cerberus’ style.”

King grinned at him. “I rather thought that would be your answer, so we need to get all of you out of here. Seth, go be charming to the doctor and see if you can’t get whatever meds they need from the hospital stash. I’d rather not leave an easy trail for someone to follow.”

“Done. That was the pretty one, right?” said Seth as he sauntered out the door.

King shook his head. “I’m telling you, someday the right woman is going to come along, and that bastard is going to fall so hard and so fast. I’m going to have a field day giving him shit.”

“Is the agent in charge of the investigation Redmond Bellows?” asked Coop.

“I think so. How that prick keeps his job is beyond me, but they keep promoting him.”

“We may have a bit of a wrinkle. He’s Anabella’s ex-fiancé, and he will know for a fact we aren’t married.”

“We don’t intend for him to get anywhere close to you two. Anabella, Samantha sent you some clothes, and there’s a sweater in there for Coop. You two need to get dressed. I’m going to bring all our guys down here and we’ll just sneak out the back.”

As King headed out, Dr. Harlowe returned.

“I’ve got your pills, but if you’re thinking of sneaking out the back stairs it won’t work. A bunch of feds just pulled up. I’ve stalled them with some red tape, and I can get you out through the doctor’s entrance. Seth told the two guys at the end of the hall where to go with your SUVs but we have to move now.”

“Where’s Seth?”

“I sent him with one of the nurses to retrieve all the stuff you came in here with.”

“You do know that technically they could say you’re aiding and abetting or that you’re interfering with a federal investigation, right?” asked King.
