“Luckily I’m not a cat!” He laughs.

“I’m just going home,” I sigh and sit in the car. I need to find something to eat. I haven’t been able to go out in public since the incident.

“And what are you going to do at home? Hide? Have you gone out since Wonder canned you?”

I glare at him. “Nice. Love the way you put that.”

“You can’t pussyfoot around these people. They all know what happened. And they’re nosy and judgmental.”

“No. I have not gone out. I don’t want to,” I say stiffly.

“I think you should. Show those assholes that you can handle their shit.”

I sigh. “But the problem is that I can’t.”

“You can. And you will. Come on.” He grabs onto my hand and drags me to his car.

“Wait a minute! What are you doing?” I try and dig my heels in and pull back.

“You need this.” He pulls me around and pleads with me. “Come on. I’ll go with you and we’ll tell these fuckers to kiss your ass.”

“I don’t want to go!” I holler, cringing when some people in the parking lot whirl to look at us.

“Jesus! Come on, Candy! You need to do this. You can’t let these people think they own you! We’ll go to that diner we used to go to. The one that was out of the way and had the best roast and potatoes. I know that’s your favorite,” he wheedles.

I close my eyes and then nod, not sure if I should do this but willing to risk it.

He grins. “Awesome! Let’s go, baby!”

“Don’t call me baby,” I grouse, letting him help me into his car and shut the door.

He nods his head and then runs around the front of the car, sliding in and grinning that smile that always makes every woman under eighty melt. Hell! Maybe even the ones over eighty too!

He’s just too damn good-looking and sweet. It’s taking a lot to remind myself of how mean he was when he got so pissed off about Jeremy.

When we’re on the way there, I look over at him and decide to bite the bullet. “Why did you get so mad that night?”

He sighs and his eyes are dark with hurt when he looks at me. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have been like that. But Jeremy had been bragging around the set how much time he spent with you. He was kinda intimating that you guys had…well, you know.”

My brows go up and I whisper, “You thought I’d have sex with another man when we were married?”

He shakes his head quickly. “No! Not really.” He sighs and then groans. “I was an idiot, I know that. But I really thought that you’d come home and I could apologize and that would be it. There wouldn’t have been so many years between then and now.”

“You hurt me, Garrett. The only man I ever loved was you. I don’t know what the hell Jeremy was talking about but he was always a perfect gentleman. I don’t know, maybe he wanted the crew to think he was a big deal or something? But I never even touched him and he didn’t touch me.”

“He was holding onto you when you walked out of that hallway.”

“That was the only time he touched me and it was because I tripped in my heels and almost fell. He caught me. Which must be what you saw.”

“Damn,” he growls. “Why the hell didn’t we talk about this a long time ago? I didn’t want to get a divorce. I love you, Candy. I never stopped loving you.”

Desire rises in me, almost choking me in its hard grip. “Should we go home?”

He shakes his head and my mouth falls open when he groans. “No. We need to do this. You need to get your gorgeous ass out there and make sure that those people realize you don’t give a shit what they think.”

“But I do,” I whisper. His large, warm hand reaches across the seat and curls around mine, his eyes seeking my gaze. “You’re not alone now, honey. I will not let them make a meal out of you. We’re gonna get you back on top if that’s where you want to be.”

“Where else would I want to be?”
