We head right into the heart of town and then drive past it, heading for the last street before you head up the mountain.

I sit up when we pull into a little house with a strange metal roof and sparkling water catchers at every fucking corner by rain barrels.

“Who the hell lives here?” I ask Heath, crawling out of the truck.

He doesn’t say a word and I want to holler at him and ask him what the hell his problem is. Of course if I do that, he might actually tell me.

He grabs a key that is in an envelope that was sitting on the seat between us. I take a look but it looks like every other key.

“What are we doing here?”

“She wants some water damage fixed where her roof was leaking.” He nods to the roof. “That’s new.”

“Wow. You can speak words.”

He sighs and stalks around me to the door. “Shit to do, Tony.”

I pretend to clap my hands and grin. “And the big oaf knows my name too!”

He rolls his eyes and we head inside, locking the door behind us for I know not what reason since we’re probably going to have to run in and out a few times.

But we go in and I look around the house curiously. “What are we working on here?”

“Water damage.” I sigh. It’s like pulling teeth talking to this guy.

“Okay. Well, do you know where we’re working?”

“Basement.”

“Jesus! Can you say more than one or two words?” I stomp off looking for the basement door.

“That’s not where the basement is!” He smirks and shows me the door behind where he’s standing in the hall.

“Funny guy,” I mutter.

I head down and take a look. “This isn’t that bad. Just a little bit of damage to a small area of the floor, which is a laminate that we were advised to bring a box of to repair a section of the floor.

“Yeah. Leaking container that sat down here for a little bit until she noticed that there was a problem.”

“Wow! So many words, man! I’m impressed!” I laugh when he flips me off and then we start working.

After about an hour, we both hear the door open upstairs and then someone walking across the floor.

“She must want to take a look at it huh?”

Heath just grunts. I roll my eyes and we cut out another section of the floor and then look at fitting a piece in it. We started at the inside and then work our way to the edge, which is where we’re finishing up.

There are steps on the stairs and I ignore them until I feel that familiar buzz on my spine. The one that I only feel when one woman is present.

I take a deep breath and I can smell her in the air now. That spice and sweet scent that I will always associate with that woman. The one that literally drives me up a wall and rips my control right out of me. I suck in a breath and slowly, so slowly, drop the piece of wood that I was attempting to cut in the correct length. Then I grit my teeth, fist my hands at my side and slowly turn around.

She’s standing there, staring at me, wide-eyed.

“What the hell are you doing in my home?” she yells.
