The tunnel branches off in several places, but if I maintain a straight course, I’ll reach them. I see the first of the marks I made on the sewer wall when I was younger. They confirm that I’m heading in the right direction. The entrance should be up ahead.

A few minutes later, I hear voices.

“You said if I helped you, I’d get everything I wanted,” a woman whines. I think it is Diana.

“You’re a fool if you thought I’d give you anything after what you’ve pulled.”

“You left me for her, not the other way around. I loved you, Dougal, but I guess you loved her more.”

They must not be close to the trapdoor. Their voices don’t sound close.

“Did you think you were special? You were like all the other women. You should have known better. Now you will feel pain like never before.”

The hatch opens silently when I push it open. Through the gap, I see Diana standing beside Ava, with my father in front of them.

No one should be able to see me, but it is the fight of my life not to announce my presence when my father raises his gun to point it at Ava.

“You promised you wouldn’t hurt her,” Diana’s panic is almost genuine.

“And you believed me? Have you forgotten what I’m capable of?”

Before Diana can answer, Dougal fires. To my shock, Diana pushes Ava out of the way without a second to spare. The bullet hits Diana.

I’m out of time, but I’ll be damned if I let my father hurt Ava.

I push the hatch fully open before yelling, “Run, Ava!”

She bolts before he knows what’s happening. I pull the trigger, hitting my father in the leg.

He shoots at me repeatedly but misses every time. He’s never been a good shot.

“You can’t be serious.” He laughs when he realizes it’s me. He must have thought I was Viktor.

As I get closer, I shoot again. Dougal’s men are running toward us but won’t make it in time to save him. They have too much distance to cover.

My father’s eyes widen when I take out my nine millimeter.

“You should have been a better man.”

ChapterThirty-Four

Viktor

From the nearest weapons table, I grab an M4, a nine millimeter, and a few clips. I’m done dealing with the fucking Irish. Getting into bed with them was the beginning of the downfall of the Manarch Clan.

The first time I met Cillian, I knew he was bad news.

“You must be Viktor Manarch. My Fiona has told me so much about you.”

“Nice to meet you.” I shake his hand.

“Come in. Would you like a drink?” He leads me deeper into the house.

“I’m good. Is Fiona ready? We need to get going.” I’m getting a bad vibe from him. My gut is telling me he can’t be trusted.

“She will be out in a minute. I’m wondering if you might introduce me to your father.” He turns to face me. “We will all meet eventually. There’s no reason it shouldn’t be now.” His words are suspicious, considering Fiona and I have only been dating for a few months.

“I’ll pass along the message.”
