I lift my chin. “Sure.”

When Aisling wiggles, I ask, “What is it, princess?”

She wiggles again, so I stroll to the bed and sit down.

“Do you want to play?” She giggles, proving I’m on the money.

“Wrapped around her little fingers just like her mother,” Oliver teases me again.

Fifteen minutes later, Ava brings Niko, who is fast asleep, back to me. She lays him in the crib she had placed in the suite. She always has everything planned down to the smallest detail.

“Hopefully, he will have a long nap so you can relax. Brenda will knock on your door in about an hour to check if he needs anything,” Ava utters.

“I’m insulted. I’ve got this,” I say.

She shakes her head, smiling. “I’ll see you at the altar. I’ll be the one wearing white.”

“I’ll be the one waiting.”

She rolls her eyes, gives me a peck on the lips, then leaves with Aisling in her arms.

“In less than two hours, you’ll no longer be a free man. You can still make a run for it,” Oliver jokes a few seconds after Ava leaves.

“You’re an asshole,” I grumble, taking a fresh drink from him.

“Never denied it. Now, let’s talk getaway,” Oliver adds, laughing.

ChapterTwo

Ava

A couple of hours earlier…

The day is finally here. Viktor and I are getting married. If I’m honest, I’d given up on the idea. It seemed like life was conspiring against us by throwing up endless obstacles. I started thinking we were cursed and our day would never come.

“Are you nervous?” Lisa asks as we pack the bag I’ll take to the hotel.

“A little,” I confess.

“Don’t be nervous. It’s about time. It’s getting lame that you and Viktor aren’t married.” Tina laughs from the closet.

“Well, we’re only getting married to make you happy,” I joke.

“Yes, please. We could use some good news for a change,” she adds more seriously.

I agree with her. It’s been one storm after another lately.

“Do you have everything you need?” Lisa asks, exiting the bathroom.

“Yes. My dress should be at the hotel already.”

“I still don’t understand why you didn’t just spend last night at the hotel,” Lisa says.

“It sure would have made everything easier,” Tina adds.

I sigh. “Victor wanted everything to be unpredictable. We checked in yesterday, but he wanted Aisling and me to arrive today. He figured if anyone was following me, ‘it would knock them off track’—his words.”

Viktor became even more overprotective since Dad visited the penthouse. I asked him if something had changed, but he claimed everything was fine. He merely wants to take precautions because of the time Fiona showed up at the house. I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and trust he’s telling the truth. At some point, I need to take him at his word. He is well aware of what will happen if he lies or keeps things from me. Just because I love him and we’re in a better place doesn’t mean I won’t leave him in a heartbeat. The safety of our children is my priority, and if anything threatens that, I won’t hesitate to leave. Even if it means leaving Viktor behind.
