“What do you know?”

His frustration reverberates down the line. “Nothing. She isn’t answering her cell. Where are you? And why the fuck didn’t you answer my calls?”

“I’m dealing with some bullshit.”

“We don’t have time to deal with your bullshit. I need you here. Now!”

With nothing else needing to be said, he hangs up.

On my drive to the mansion, I can’t focus. Despite the evidence, there’s no way Ava is my sister, and I didn’t know.

This is so fucked up. We were abandoned by thesamewoman. Ava has been alone and unprotected for so many years when I could have been beside her.

I’ve always felt a connection to Ava. The instant I met her, I wanted to protect her even when I wanted her gone. Could it be because blood calls blood?

As I pull toward the gates of the mansion, I see at least a dozen men standing guard. The guards move to the side to let me in. I drive in and park, but I take a deep breath before I get out of my car.

I have no idea what is waiting for me.

“Took you long enough,” Viktor snaps out when I enter the den.

“What do you know?”

Viktor is too worked up to see sense through the madness. “What the fuck is your problem? I had to call you multiple times and text you to get you here.”

Needing a drink to lessen my nerves, I head to the bar while repeating, “What do you know?”

“Ava is missing, and you want a fucking drink?” I ignore him and pour a double shot of whiskey. “Do you care at all? She’s fucking missing!” I down the generous serving like a shot, then pour again. “Oliver!”

The glass almost breaks when I slam it onto the bar. “What do you want me to say? I just fucking got here. Give me a second.”

The words have barely left my mouth when Viktor punches me. After grabbing the scruff of my shirt, he pulls me to within an inch of his face. “Do you know who took her? Is that what you’re hiding? Is that why you wouldn’t answer my calls?”

“You’re not the only one dealing with shit.”

He swings again, but I weave.

He tries again, but I connect first this time around. My hit sends Viktor’s head snapping to the side and blood pools in the corner of his mouth.

“Enough!” Angus yells, getting between us. “We have to focus,” I wipe the blood dribbling from my nose with the back of my hand when he adds. “This isn’t the time to be a dobber. Focus.”

“I will once he talks.” Viktor locks his dark-as-death eyes with me. “Where have you been?”

“Seeing our mother,” I spit out, my words snappy.

“So, you couldn’t answer the cell when I called because you were with our mother?” He scoffs like he doesn’t believe a word I speak. “What could have been so important for you to ignore my calls?”

He takes a step back as if physically shunted when I say, “Diana Byrne.”

“Who the fuck is Diana Byrne?”

His shock grows when I answer, “Ava’s mother.” I guess Ava didn’t tell him her mother resurfaced.

“I don’t understand. What does she have to do with anything?”

Certain he will need a stiff drink, I return to the bar, pour two drinks, and then hand one to him. He downs his drink when I admit, “She’s also my biological mother.”

“Fuck.” He seems lost in thought for a minute before asking, “Who told you?” Viktor always panics that Ava is missing. Half the time, she loses herself at House of Beauty and forgets to check in.
