Cillian won’t stop. He has made it clear he wants revenge for Fiona’s death. I won’t let him get close to my family again. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect them. So right now, I’m at the guardhouse, practicing my shooting.

“You’re getting pretty good.”

I turn to face the voice. “Oliver, what a surprise. I thought you were at Eros?”

Recalling Viktor’s lessons on gun safety, I place my gun on the table.

“I was, but I came to talk with you.”

The pitch of his voice tells me something is wrong. I’m immediately on alert. “What is it?”

I pick up my gun, release the clip, and set everything on the table.

“Let’s take a stroll.”

“Oliver—”

“Please,” he pleads.

I let out a long breath. “Fine.”

We go back into the guardhouse. He’s quiet as he steers us toward the front door. The silence is unbearable.

We’re barely outside when I speak again. “Tell me what is wrong.”

“You never talk about your mother. When did she leave you?”

His question throws me for a loop. “I wouldn’t call it leaving. It was more like she abandoned me. I was really little. Why?”

He continues interrogating me. “Do you remember anything about her?”

“Not really. What is this about?”

When we reach the bench on the side of the main house, he orders, “Sit.”

“Oliver, just tell me.”

“Please.” I sit, and he continues talking. “A few weeks ago, your mother showed up at Eros to speak with me.”

“Why would my mother want to speak with you?” I ask, confused.

“She told me that I’m her son.”

I stare at him in silence for a few seconds, unsure of what to say.

“Are you sure she was telling you the truth? My mother can’t be trusted. She could be lying to get to me.”

Oliver closes his eyes. “I confirmed it with my mother.”

“Anita knows my mother?” I ask, feeling lost.

“She knew her a lifetime ago.”

“I’m confused.” I don’t understand what he is trying to tell me.

“Diana Byrne, your mother, is also my biological mother.”

I stand and start pacing. “I would’ve known if my mother had a son,” I murmur, more to myself than to Oliver.
