“I hate this,” she whispers, fighting tears.

“Me too. I’ll end this. I swear.” I nudge my head to the door. “Go get everything ready. I need to call Oliver.”

“Okay.” She kisses my lips, then leaves.

As I exit my bedroom, I can’t help the unsettled feeling in the pit of my stomach. Oliver wouldn’t call a Code Black lightly. I go downstairs to my office. The first thing I do is check the perimeter before calling Oliver. Everything is quiet. The cameras indicate nothing is wrong.

I’m about to dial Oliver’s number when I hear a flash-bang. I search the monitors to see where the attack is coming from. The cameras of the south wall by the guardhouse show activity. I grab my gun and run upstairs.

A second flash-bang goes off. It sounds closer than the first.

“What the fuck is that?” Ava screams from the top of the stairs.

“We are being attacked. Where is Brenda?”

“In Aisling’s bedroom with the kids,” she answers.

“Take the secret passage. You’ll find an SUV parked at the side. The keys are in the ignition. Don’t look back. Just drive.” I make it to the top of the stairs before my last demand leaves my mouth.

“Viktor, I can’t leave you. You need to come with us.”

I hold her in place for her to focus. “They want me. I can’t defend myself if I’m worried about you and the kids. You know the plan. You got this, Ava. Take this.” I hand her my gun.

“Viktor,” she starts as a few tears escape her.

“You need to go. Now!” I push her to Aisling’s bedroom. “Brenda, take Niko. Come on, princess.” I gather Aisling in my arms and kiss the top of her head. “Dadda loves you.” I hand her to Ava, my hands shaking. “Little man, take care of Momma and your sister. Dadda loves you, too.” I kiss the top of his head while silently praying it won’t be the last time. “I love you, Ava. You only have one job, to follow the plan,” I remind her.

“I love you, too.”

When I kiss her, I taste the saltiness of her tears.

“You only have minutes. Call Oliver once you’re outside the property,” I demand after breaking away from her embrace.

“I need to get my cell.”

I direct her away from our room. “Leave it. There should be a burner in the SUV. Now go.” I order as I hear gunfire.

“Stay alive,” She pleads while placing her hand on my cheek.

“I intend to.”

Everything happens so fast. I watch Ava and the kids go downstairs and try to dial Oliver, but I have no service.

They’re jamming the signal. After entering the secret compartment in my bedroom, I remove two nine millimeters and several clips, along with a burner cell.

As I leave the bedroom, I check around every corner. The intruders haven’t made it to the second floor yet.

Downstairs the gunshots are loud, but not inside the mansion.

Back inside my office, I go straight to the monitors. I see an SUV driving through the open gates.

Ava made it out. Thank fuck.

No one appears to be following her, so I let out a deep breath. Now I need a plan.

When I scan the monitors, all I see is pure fucking chaos. The men entering the property are attacking in formations. The kind of formations I trained with when I was young.

This attack is led by my father.
