In fifteen more seconds, we will reach the guardhouse.

The guardhouse is on fire.

“Go to the running path behind the guard house. I parked my SUV parked at the end of that.”

We keep running. I drop two men as we get closer to the path. We’re nearing the end of the track, but I don’t see anything. I’m going to speak when I see the SUV.

But there are people beside it.

Angus stops suddenly, causing me to run into him.

“What’s wrong?” I whisper.

“No one should know about the SUV back here.”

I do a quick surveillance of the area. “I count four. Take the two to the right. I’ll take the two on the left.”

It’s quick.

We drop them like flies.

“The Irish,” Angus declares.

“They’re after my head,” I grumble to myself. “Where are the keys?”

When Angus dangles them in front of me, I shake my head.

“Where to?”

I answer without a second thought. “To the safe house. I need to get to Ava and the kids. The Irish can have the estate.”

Even though I want to stay and kill every single Irish, I need to get to my family. After my family is out of harm’s way, I’m burning Cillian alive.

ChapterTwenty-Six

Ava

Brenda, Aisling, Niko, and I hurry through the secret passage. I replay my last conversation with Niko as we hustle along.

I told Viktor he needs to stay alive. Even though he said he would be safe, I saw the uncertainty in her eyes. Our last kiss felt like a goodbye. I hear gunshots. The noise grows louder, sounding closer, causing both kids to cry.

I stop and glance at Brenda. “This is the point of no return. If you come with me, you won’t be able to leave. By now, you have seen the life we live. I won’t fault you choose not to come with us. I will find a way to get you to safety.”

“I’m not leaving you alone with the kids. I knew what I was getting myself into when I took the job, and I’ve stayed this long.”

I exhale, grateful for her answer because I can use her help. “It’ll be quick. Don’t look. Just get inside the car, get in the back seat, and I’ll hand you Aisling. There won’t be any booster seats, so make do however you can.” I try to sound calm despite the gunfire and screams ringing around us. “Take a deep breath.”

Finally, we reach the end of the tunnel. I give her a second, then open the door. The SUV is in direct view, and there’s no one in sight. We have a clear path. “Ready?” I ask her.

“Yes.”

“Run.”

We sprint as fast as our legs will take us. Brenda opens the back door and practically throws herself inside. I’m opening my door when I spot a man coming our way. Not a friend.

I throw Aisling in the car, making her cry harder.

“Take her, Brenda.”
