“There’s a second car. Get the kids on the floor,” I snap to Brenda.

“Talk to me, Ava,” Oliver says after waiting a second for Brenda to do as asked.

“They’re trying to get alongside me.”

“Don’t let them. Press the gas. Ray!” I hear him call. “Get four men. We’re meeting Ava.”

“Oliver, stay put. I’ve got this.”

“Focus on driving. Where are you now?” Oliver asks, ignoring my assurance.

“About to jump on the interstate.”

“Good. Gun it. If the cops pull you over, even better. Take a breath. You’ve got this.”

I switch lanes every few minutes. Hopefully, this will slow them down.

I’m grateful when I see the entrance to the interstate. There are no cars in front of me, so I get onto the highway easily. I drive all the way to the left, cutting off a semi. Hopefully, it will mean the two cars won’t catch up right away. The semi should slow them down. I hope.

Brenda has managed to calm the kids a little, but they’re still crying.

“Ava, where are you?” I’m startled by Oliver’s voice. I forgot he was on the cell’s speaker.

“Two exits away.”

“Good. We’re almost there. You’ll see two SUVs on the shoulder at the exit. I want you to increase your speed. It’ll feel like we’re cutting you off, but just let us in.”

“I don’t understand,” I murmur, confused.

“Think of it as us shuffling cards. The cars following you won’t be able to tell which SUV you’re in. Drive straight to Eros and go straight to The Box.”

“What about you?”

His voice crackles as he replies, “Don’t worry about me. Just get inside The Box. Viktor or I will come and get you when it’s safe.”

“I can’t lose either of you.” I swallow the sob dying to come out.

“You won’t. Just do what I say.”

“Promise me you will be careful.”

“Always. One last thing…”

When he waits, I ask, “What is it?”

“Pull up to Eros, and go straight into The Box. There are men outside guarding Eros. Don’t stop for anyone.”

“Okay.”

“Take care of yourself and the kids.” I can hear his rapid heart rate in his words, “I see you. Ready?”

“Yes.”

“I love you.”

Even in the tension of the situation, his comment warms my heart. “I love you, too, Oliver.”

“Gun it,” he orders.
