I push the gas all the way to the floor as two cars close in on me. Before they get any closer, the first SUV swerves, colliding with one of the cars. The second SUV pulls in behind me, blocking the other car.

I feel like I can finally breathe.

“Oliver,” I call out.

I get no answer.

I call his name a few more times, but there’s still no reply.

I can’t think the worst. I need to focus. Especially as I now see Eros up ahead. At least a dozen men are standing outside the club. I glance in the rearview mirror. There’s no one behind me—friend or foe.

“Brenda, I’ll get out of the car first and come around to open your door. Pass me one of my kids, and take the other one. I’ll go in first. Stay super close to me. I don’t care if you bump into me.”

“Okay.”

I drive onto the sidewalk, making a few men jump back. Hopefully, they know it’s me. Opening the door, I run around the SUV. Before I get to the other side, one of the men is already moving for the passenger side door. I’ve never seen him before, but I have to trust he’s one of ours.

“Mrs. Manarch, hurry.”

When I follow his gaze, I swallow harshly. There are cars driving toward Eros.

What the hell is going on?

He tosses open the passenger door.

“Fuck. We have to move, Brenda.” She passes Niko to me as the first bullet flies over my head. I wait for her to get out. A wall of men surrounds us.

“Run, Mrs. Manarch,” someone holding the door to Eros yells.

I start running, occasionally glancing back to ensure Brenda is still close behind. We make it through the door just as the thump of a man falling booms into my ears. Inside Eros, everything is pure chaos. Men are readying weapons, and orders are being yelled.

“Walk straight ahead. Don’t look back or stop,” I instruct Brenda.

I swear it takes us only seconds to get to the door that leads to The Box. I key in my numbers, and the door pops open. Downstairs, I enter my pin again. Then I stand to the side to let Brenda in first.

“Go in,” I wait until the door closes before I enter deeper.

The click of the bolt locking into place brings me comfort.

“Are we safe here?” Brenda asks, raising her voice over the sound of my crying kids.

“Yes. Only two people can get in here besides me. Oliver and Viktor. The door on your left leads to a bedroom and shower. The one on the right is the kitchen. Let’s give the kids a quick bath, and I’ll feed them.”

“Okay.”

When I walk over to the monitors and turn them on, Aisling and Niko stop crying. At some point, Viktor or Oliver brought in two playpens. We set them up.

With adrenaline roaring through my body, making me shake, it takes an hour to get Niko and Aisling down for the night. I glance at the time to find it’s close to nine. It feels like days have passed. I’m drained, but I can’t rest yet.

I check the monitors. The people from the cars are no longer a threat, and men are spread throughout the property, making me feel a little at ease.

“I’d ask if you were okay, but I doubt you are.”

Brenda smiles shakily. “I’ve had better days.”

“If you’re hungry, there’s food in the fridge. Please feel free to take a shower and change. You should be able to find something that fits you in the closet.”

“Thanks.”
