“Are you decent?” she teases.

I meet her eyes on the mirror’s surface and my mouth edges up. “Never,” I answer with an unrepentant smirk.

She walks over and reaches for my toothbrush, squeezing some toothpaste on the bristles. “Here you go,” she says, handing it over.

I can’t help smiling as I start to brush. I love how she’s babying me. I could definitely get used to this.

“Are you hungry?” she asks.

I spit into the sink and rinse my mouth. “Yeah, I could eat something.”

“What sounds good?”

You.I clear my throat and scrape a hand over the light beard on my face. “I know you’re not going to approve, but meat. Like a big, thick, juicy burger.”

“I think that can be arranged,” she says. “Even though I don’t personally support eating animal carcasses, I think you’ve earned it.”

“Sorry, Sai. I’m a red-meat-loving, red-blooded American. I’d kill for a double bacon cheeseburger from Hodad’s right now.”

She gives me a little nod.

“And a side of onion rings.”

“I’ll go place the order. Are you okay by yourself for a minute?”

Her concern and attention are new, completely foreign to me, but I fucking love it. “Yeah, thanks,” I say.

“Okay. Be right back,” she promises and walks out.

I lean back against the counter, admiring the sway of her curvy ass in those little booty shorts she’s wearing, and my groin tightens. At least everything is in working order and raring to go down there. I’m starting to feel more like myself with each passing minute and I think food is going to help. I’m a big guy and I haven’t had a decent meal in days. I know it’s dramatic, but I feel like I’m wasting away.

After finishing up in the bathroom, I wander out to the living room and see her in the kitchen, laying out a couple of place settings on the small table.

“I was going to come back and help you,” she chastises me. “You should’ve waited for me.”

My mouth edges up. “I appreciate the concern, but I can handle the short walk.”

Her dark brow furrows. I’ve always loved how her eyebrows are so much darker than her golden head of hair. Something about the contrast gets me every time.

“Sit,” she orders me, pulling out a chair.

“Yes, ma’am,” I drawl as I lower myself down. I let out a breath and realize I’m a little worn out from my recent exertions. Sailor sits down across from me, checking the place out. She’s never been over before, but I really like her here. She fills the place with an energy that was missing. I wonder what she’s thinking. I doubt she’s very impressed– it’s definitely a bachelor pad.

As though reading my mind, she says, “I like your condo. I mean, you could use a little help decorating, but it’s a nice setup.”

“Thanks. Between all the traveling and work lately, I don’t spend a lot of time here, so I’ve never cared much,” I admit. “I guess it could use a woman’s touch, though.”

She reaches for her water and twists the cap off. “I’m surprised Penelope didn’t help with that.”

Sailor does a good job keeping her tone neutral, but I can hear the unspoken questions and uncertainty in her voice: Do you regret breaking up? Do you miss her? Is it really over?

As much as Sailor and I play games, I’m getting tired of it. I want more from her, including her trust. And the only way to accomplish that is to be completely honest. I meet her steady blue gaze and spill the truth. “We didn’t have a great relationship,” I admit. “All she ever talked about was marriage and babies.”

“That’s not something you want?” she asks, still maintaining that detached tone.

“Maybe one day,” I say slowly. “But wanting to spend the rest of my life with a woman and having kids with her is huge. And I couldn’t see any of that with Penelope. So I told her that and we broke up.”

“Oh,” she simply says, then looks down at the table.
