Ainsley won’t even talk about them and says they’re dead to her. I know she feels responsible, which is crazy because you sure as hell can’t choose your parents.

I love mine, but we were strangers for most of my childhood.

I hop in the van, and we drive through slow traffic in the city centre. It takes about an extra twenty minutes, but we finally leave the city, and our house comes into view.

“You good, babe?” I ask, sneaking a peek at her reaction. She’s smiling softly, and I swear, I have never seen anything so fucking beautiful.

She nods. “I love this house, and I can’t wait for the rest of our lives, Casper.”

“I’m going to make you happy, no matter how much you resist.”

“My only objection is you paying for everything.”

“Will you still be difficult when we’re married? You’ll legally be entitled to everything.”

“I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it.”

“Well, you better think fast because I’ve had a ring in my pocket for the last week.”

She gasps, turning in her seat. I see her wide eyes in my peripheral vision and laugh.

“Casper…?”

“I need a ring on that finger before you realise you can do better.”

“What’s happening?” she mutters.

“Hold on.” I pull into the drive of the house, cut the engine, and turn to her. “I’ve loved you since the first time I saw you.”

“Casper, think about what you’re doing.”

“I’ve thought about nothing else since I first kissed you,” I tell her, taking the little red box out of my pocket. “Ainsley, you are my entire world. I want nothing more than to spend my life loving you. Marry me, sweetheart.”

Her eyes well with tears, and I think this is about to go my way.

“I love you, too, and I want nothing more than to be your wife… but I’m paying for the wedding, too.”

I laugh and slide the ring on her finger. “Absolutely not… but let’s go inside and fight about this properly,” I reply, leaning over and taking her mouth.
