Yes.“You make me batshit crazy. I don’t understand how one human can be so infuriating.”

It’s more honest that I intended to be, but why lie at this point? He’d probably be able to sense it, anyway. Isn’t that what a good lawyer can do? See a lie and then help you tell it better.

“I make you crazy. This is interesting. Have you given that much thought? Why would someone you hate make you feel that way?”

“Why do you make people want to jump off a cliff? You should ask yourself that.”

“That’s quite dramatic, isn’t it?”

“I don’t think so, no.”

He looks up to the ceiling, then back at me. “Will you be okay if I leave?”

As soon as he asks, disappointment sews itself into my skin.

“Oh, yeah, of course. I have a shift at the library soon and then I need to get back in touch with the caterers for the party. Something about allergy management I apparently need to devote some time to.”

He holds his hand out as I move to pass him. “Hold on. Since when have you worked in the morning?”

“It’s a temporary thing. I picked a few more shifts up over half term. A couple of members of staff have holidays.”

I love it when I’m able to do that. During the summer break, I’m able to make double. It’ll help when I graduate.

Casper frowns. He wears that expression well, too.

Since I spied on him in his sleep, I’ve been finding him ridiculously attractive. Physically, I mean. A crush on your nemesis is totally normal behaviour, right?

I feel like I should seek help.

“Why is the library open over half term?”

“Not everyone leaves campus. We’re still here. Staff are on reduced hours, but the extra shifts still make it more for me.”

He shoves his hands in his pockets, wincing and quickly dragging that poker face back into place. “I should take you there.”

It’s the first time I’ve heard him hesitate, but it’s not as if he’s unsure if he wants to take me. It’s likehe’sthe nervous one. I replay it in my head over and over. Does it even mean anything?

“The walk will be good, but thanks for the offer. And thank you so much for last night. I really don’t know what I would have done without you. You were… amazing.”

He’s still for the longest time, his expression alarmed or confused. It’s hard to tell whether he wants to stay and assist or pack a bag and move away.

As I’m about to ask if he’s okay, he nods once and walks away, leaving a cold void in his place.

What just happened?

I watch him escape as fast as he can, leaving me completely unsure of how last night changes things or if it even does. After being so nice, do we go back to how things were now?

The thought is unsettling. I don’t want to forget what happened between us. It’s the most normal thing we’ve done… even if it did involve a break-in.

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

I arrive early for my shift because I didn’t like being home alone after Casper left. The house felt big, cold, and unsafe. His car was in my drive when I walked past, so he clearly didn’t need to be anywhere. I can only assume he’d had enough of being around me this morning.

Though, I could have sworn I saw him in town right before I reached the library. That would mean he’s also taken up stalking. Not something I feel I can judge him for now that I’ve watched him sleep.

But he couldn’t get away quick enough once I told him I was fine to walk.

Okay, for one, who cares? He doesn’t owe me anything. Anyway, he might be busy at home… and I’m just seeking him out like a psycho.
