When he turns around, he’s… different. His shoulders have slumped, and his eyebrows are tight, on the edge of frowning. “Do you have any idea how it feels to get a call like that?”

“No, I don’t,” I say softly, his sudden sincerity making me want to close the distance.

He nods once and takes a deep breath that clears the emotion etched into his expression. “Then, it’s going to be ten seconds. Waitrose are going to deliver groceries tomorrow morning. Between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. I smell coffee.”

“Wait, what?” I ask, following him into the kitchen.

He helps himself to one of the mugs. We take coffee the same way, but I would have thought he would check if I’d drunk from one yet, though he can’t care about germs with the number of women he’s had in his room.

“Casper, hey, wait up. What do you mean, Waitrose are coming tomorrow?”

“Please explain how that could be confusing.”

I clench my fists. “Okay, whyare they coming tomorrow?”

“I placed an order.”

“Casper.”

“Neither of us have food in, and I don’t fancy cheese on toast again in the morning.”

“Fine,” I huff and immediately regret it. “Let me know what I owe you. And why is it coming so early?”

“No, and that was the only slot they had before 5:00 p.m. I’ll be up.”

“You wake early?” I ask, taking my coffee.

“Always have. I’m used to only getting a few hours of sleep now.”

“That sounds miserable. I need my beauty sleep.”

He raises a brow and walks to the living room.

There haven’t been many occasions when he’s been in my house over the last year—only if we’ve had a party, but we mostly go to his—yet he seems very comfortable here already.

Casper sits on the sofa and looks up at me. It’s an invitation to join him that does nothing to cool the heat pooling in the depths of my stomach.

Even when he’s irritating me, I want him.

It would be rude to go up to my room now, so I sit.

Like I’m doing this because of etiquette.

“Do you have work tomorrow?” he asks.

“Nope. Tomorrow off, then I’m working most days before Reggie is home.”

“Do you have much more planning to do for the event?”

“Oh, yeah. Most of it is chasing people and making sure we get everything confirmed in writing. The last thing I want is for none of the entertainment to arrive because we got the dates mixed up. Rule one: double check everything.”

“You sound so much like Reggie.”

“I imagine attention to detail is quite important in your career, too.”

He blows out a breath. “You would not believe the number of people who forget the small stuff. Sometimes the tiniest detail breaks a case.”

“I still don’t understand how you can represent a killer.”
