The sight of the two of them would weigh on my mind for days. However, I’d done the right thing.

But if the bastard crossed me again, I wouldn’t be as generous.

“Why?” Francesco asked before sliding into the passenger seat.

I thought about his question and glanced toward the stunning colors in the sky. “Because sometimes you need to do the right thing, even in our business. Once you learn that, you’ll become a great leader, Francesco. Until then, you’ll only see things in black and white. That makes you dangerous and unpredictable. Life is still precious even in our world of violence and pain.”

He took a few seconds before answering. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“You do that.”

I eased into the driver’s seat, refusing to take another look. Family was something I’d never thought much about over the years, even though my parents had been good people.

Maybe now, it was time to take what I’d learned from them into practice.

As I pulled away, I took a deep breath. Now it was the right moment to begin another phase of my life, one filled with something other than bloodshed.

All because one time in my life, I’d been a hero.

The Lone Ranger.

Go figure.

CHAPTER25

Madisen

“You know I’m afraid of heights. Right?” I asked, my heart in my throat as I glanced out the helicopter window.

I felt his arm slipping around me, tugging me as close as the seatbelt would allow. “Baby, you’re safe with me.”

Safe.

I’d never really considered the word in the context of what I’d been doing the last week or so. What continued to catch me by surprise was that I felt safe being in his arms or even just in the same room.

Even now as the pilot descended on LA, butterflies had taken over my entire system. I had one hand wrapped around his arm, my nails likely scarring his skin.

“How long is the flight to New York?”

“Five and a half hours. Plenty of time to enjoy each other in privacy.”

“You mean other than the pilot and at least one attendant. Right?” I shifted my attention in Danny’s direction, savoring this moment of being alone with him. Being in a house with several brutal men had enhanced the aspects of danger instead of comforting me in any way.

“They’ve been trained not to pay attention to what goes on.”

“It’s amazing what money buys,” I teased.

“It’s all about power.” He brushed his knuckles across my cheek and grinned in the same way I remembered from years before.

As if he had something up his sleeve.

“What aren’t you telling me?” I asked, my tone as demanding as I could make it.

“Who, me?”

I playfully punched him in the stomach, trying to ignore the fact the helicopter had descended at least another five hundred feet. “Yes, you. I don’t like secrets.”

“You’ll like this one. But…” he said as he placed his finger against the bridge of my nose, “you need to learn patience. I have some business to take care of first.”
