He tackled me down, but my body reacted instinctively.

We’d practiced this in the gym a million times by now.

Instead of trying to fight Darryl and his incredible strength with my human strength, I used his speed against him. His momentum was so great thanks to his speed, that helping him along was easier. When he tackled me to the ground, I threw myself backward, kicking my legs up, and he flew into the steel tables behind me.

They clattered to the ground as they fell, and Darryl crashed into them.

I’d learned how to use a vampire’s momentum, but now he was angry and set on getting what he wanted, and I didn’t have what it took to fight the monster. Although I was getting fitter and stronger, what I could do was far from being enough to save me.

I looked at the door. If I made a run for it now, I might be able to get away.

I turned and started running, but Darryl was in front of me in a flash.

He looked monstrous, his chest heaving, saliva dripping from his teeth, and his eyes were pools of pure black.

Suddenly, Colter appeared in front of us. He grabbed me, twisted his ring, and just like that, we were gone.

When we appeared in the penthouse, I scrambled backward and fell, only realizing I was safe a moment later.

I cried out, my breathing so hard and fast, I hyperventilated.

“Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay,” Colter said and kneeled in front of me. He cupped my head, his hands over my hair behind my neck. “It’s okay, we’re home. I’ve got you.”

I gasped for air and nodded.

“It’s okay,” I echoed his words, trying to make them sink in. “You didn’t kill him.”

“No,” Colter said. “It wasn’t necessary.”

“You’re not a murderer.”

“Not when I don’t need to be.”

I still breathed hard, but slowly, I regained control.

“Thank you,” I said.

“No, Liv. Thankyou. The machine is here, and you’re alive.”

I lifted a trembling hand to Colter’s face before I sagged back against the couch behind me. The machine was safe. I was safe.

A vampire had attacked me, and I’d handled it—I was still alive.

“Come,” Colter said. “After that, I need a drink, and I think you could do with one, too.”

“Actually, yeah,” I said.

He helped me up, and we walked around the couch to the wet bar together.

A drink wasn’t going to be nearly enough to help me figure out what this new life of mine was all about, but for now, I just needed to recover, relish in the fact that I’d beaten the vampire—sort of—and we’d won this round.

That was something.

When I woke up the next morning, Liv was in bed next to me. Her dark hair fanned out over my pillow, and her breathing was even and deep.
