“That’s what I meant, too.”

She kissed me again, and when she broke the kiss, I fell back against the pillows.

“Colter wants to see you,” Rory said. “I can tell him to come back when you’re feeling better.”

I shook my head. “Send him to me now.”

Rory nodded, but it was Elaine who left the room. A moment later, Colter appeared. The dragon shifter’s face was serious when he looked me over.

“They did a number on you, huh?”

“It’s no joke, playing with dark magic.”

“Trust me, I know.”

He’d had a run-in with dark magic himself when he’d played with the idea of getting the vampires on his team. It had failed, but at least he’d survived it, the same way I’d survived this.

It was all thanks to the women in our lives.

“I’ve been thinking,” Colter said.

“Never a good thing for people like us,” I said with a grin.

Colter chuckled. “Yeah. Still, we’ve both been looking for a way to strengthen our packs, to solidify our territory, and to be better and stronger than we already are.”

I nodded.

“I think we should turn to the right people to do that. No dark magic, nothing strange like messing with magic other than our own.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“An alliance between our packs,” Colter said simply. “It will get us what we need without the added danger, and if either of us needs backup, well, the other will be there.”

I didn’t need time to think about it—it was a good plan.

“I’m down for that,” I said.

Colter held out his hand, and we shook on it.

“I know Rory means a lot to you,” I added.

“I don’t own her.”

“No, but you do see her as a sister.”

Colter nodded.

“It’s only right for me to ask you for your blessing to not only have her in my pack, but to take her as my mate.”

“You don’t need my blessing.”

“No, I don’t, but if it were the other way around, I’d like the common decency to ask first. Which is what I’m doing now.”

Colter smiled warmly. “You’re a good alpha, Bishop. I didn’t think so at first, but you’re an exceptional shifter. If you love Rory, and she loves you, you belong together. I know what it means to find your soulmate.”

I thought about how many times these past few days our souls had come into play.

The word soulmate had so many levels between Rory and me.
