“Wow.” He looked at the bottle that was already halfway gone. “Having a good time?”

I grumbled something inaudible.

Felix walked to me.

“Do you want some?” I asked.

“Yeah, but from a glass,” Felix said. He got up and found himself a tumbler, at home in my bar. We’d spent a lot of nights drinking here. He poured himself a bit of whiskey and sat down on the stool, eyeing me.

“So, you look like shit,” he pointed out.

“Thanks, asshole,” I said and took another swig.

Felix narrowed his eyes at me. “What did you do?”

I glared at him. “Since when do you question me like that?”

“Did you… damn it, Jameson, the mate bond is all over you. What did youdo?”

“I slept with her,” I said, twisting my face. “I couldn’t help myself. I couldn’t keep her at arm’s length, I fuckingsleptwith her.”

“Oaklee,” Felix said.

It was a statement, not a question. He knew exactly who it was. He could sense the mate bond and her scent on me, which would be the same for her—any shifter who ran into her would know she’d been claimed, and anyone who knew me would know that I was her mate.

Her mate.

“I don’t like it,” Felix said.

I frowned. “Do you think I do?”

“Well, youdid,” Felix sniffed.

“Fuck you,” I spat.

Felix folded his arms over his chest. “What do you know about her? What do you really know about the female you’re now deciding to have rule at your side?”

“That’s not what this is,” I said immediately. “We’re not talking about anything like that. Besides, how the hell am I supposed to say I know her well enough so the mate bond shouldn’t exist? You know how this shit works—the bond will happen whether we like it or not.”

Felix narrowed his eyes. “Do you like it?”

I scowled. How was I supposed to know what I wanted, what I liked, if I was ready for any of this. I’d still be hung up about the fact that I’d broken my promise to myself and had sex with her. I’d been hung up about the fact that she’d been a virgin and hadn’t told me.

The mate bond in the mix was just too much for me to handle.

“Tell me you’re here with good news,” I said. “I can use you distracting me with something.”

Felix hesitated. “It’s not exactly good news, but I’m sure it will distract you.”

I frowned. “Hit me with it.” I took another swig of whiskey, gulping twice for good measure.

“Tate’s people are in town.”

My blood ran cold. “What did you say?”

“They were spotted coming in last night, late. They put themselves up in an Airbnb, but they’re already somewhere else today, a rental apartment according to the cat I put on their trail. I don’t know if they’ll stay there for long. It think they’re going to keep moving around, hoping to stay under the radar and not draw attention.”

Anger flared up inside me. Tate had some nerve coming back into LA after what he’d done. He had to know I was going to kill him with my bare hands if I saw him. I didn’t make threats, and after what he’d done to Delaney, I wouldn’t have mercy.
