“No.”

“But, boss—”

“No.”

He huffed in irritation. “You didn’t even listen to what I had to say.”

“And I don’t need to. The only way this works is if you put away those psychopathic tendencies and work as a team.”

He groaned. “Boss, you know I hate all that team shit. I really work better on my own.”

“And you came to me because you wanted the plane. Without it, you have to do this on your own.”

I hadn’t meant that as an invitation for him to try a different route, but it was out there now.

“Fine,” he muttered. “I’ll do it your way, but I don’t have to like it.”

He turned to leave, but I had a bad feeling that was way too easy. “Fox, if you get into any trouble, I’ll remove all Funyuns from the premises.”

He snorted. “Sure, boss,” he said, turning away from me.

“And shawarma.”

He paused and sighed heavily. “Yeah, okay.”

“Are you doing okay?” Rae asked as we headed to our terminal.

I blew out a harsh breath, trying to keep my cool. In all honesty, the more time that passed, the more I was beating myself up over my actions. I should have done more to check on Carolyn. I shouldn’t have taken her note to heart without at least trying to talk to her. It was stupid and selfish on my part. And my choices directly affected that kid. But she didn’t need to hear all the bullshit going on in my head.

“Yeah, I’m good. I’m just eager to get down there and find out where Theo is.”

“We’ll find him.”

“You don’t know that,” I retorted. “He’s been gone for a month and nobody knew. He could be anywhere by now. To think that he’s caught up with the kind of people that would sell humans is…”

“Yeah, I know.”

We were just about to our gate when we heard a familiar voice. “Hey!”

I turned with Rae and shook my head as Fox came running through the crowd. “Did you invite him along?”

“No, but no one ever does. He just shows up.”

“Really?”

She nodded. “It’s a thing.”

“And now he’s coming with us?” I asked as Fox ran over to us.

“Hey, guys!” Fox grinned. “Bet you thought you were leaving without me.”

“One could hope,” Rae muttered.

“Did you bring my Funyuns?”
