“Fuck, Fox, tell me you didn’t use Eva to get to me.”

“I didn’t use Eva to get to you.”

“Liar,” I growled. “You’re not going to Louisiana, and that’s final.”

“Boss—”

“I can’t believe you were here to distract me so he could slip away,” I snapped at Eva. “You’re supposed to be on my side.”

“I am, but I’m also on Rae’s side.”

“Eva,” I growled.

She slinked away from me, shrugging as she passed Fox. “Sorry.”

“Seriously?” I snapped at Fox. “Using my wife against me?”

He grinned at me. “It sounds good, doesn’t it? Wife. Badass, man.”

“I know, I—” I narrowed my eyes at him. “Stop fucking doing that. You’re not going to distract me.”

He cocked an eyebrow at me. “You know, boss, I’m going whether you like it or not. If you say no, I’ll just fly down on my own. And then there’ll probably be a few deaths involved. Not that I want to kill anyone, but it just sort of happens when I’m around.”

“You’re not going. That’s final.”

“Boss, you’re sending Rae down with no backup.”

“She’s got Duke.”

“Duke’s out of the military,” he pointed out. “He’s a do-gooder. You’re essentially sending Rae on a mission and telling her she’s on her own.”

“Rae can take care of herself.”

“Yeah? Eva can take care of herself. Would you send me on a mission alone with Eva?”

I opened my mouth to argue, but he had a point. “If I agree to this, there are rules.”

“Boss,” he groaned.

I held up my hand. The last thing I needed right now were arguments from him. “There are rules or you don’t go.”

“Fine.”

“Scottie flies you down there.”

“I was going to suggest that.”

“Under no circumstances are you allowed to torture anyone.”

He scrunched up his nose in disgust. “I think that’s taking it a little far.”

“Really?” I snapped. “You can’t go on a trip and promise not to torture anyone?”

He thought about it for a second. “Nope, sorry. Even if I was going to Disney World, I couldn’t make that promise. What if I inadvertently ran into someone that was bad? Would you want me to walk away knowing I could prevent something terrible from happening?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. Christ, dealing with Fox was too much on a normal day, let alone when I was desperate to fuck my wife. “Fox, you will behave yourself on this trip. No damage to the city. You’re there to gather intel, and that’s it. There’s no one to kidnap, no need to torture anyone, and under no circumstances are you to get Duke into trouble.”

“Actually, I was thinking I could leave them behind and do a little recon on my own. You know, it’s easier for me to—”
