There was definitely more to her story.

Who was this woman? What had brought her here?

Beneath her intelligent gaze, there was purpose and determination.

Just like Duke . . . her job was a means to an end, wasn’t it?

But what was that end? Would she ever open up to him about it?

Duke cleared his throat as he shoved those thoughts aside. “Listen, I was thinking about that property deed, trying to figure out how we can find more information. If there was some type of tomfoolery going on with it, then there was probably manipulation or extortion involved. I always thought it was strange that the whole group was able to get property together, that no one else had staked claim to that area.”

Andi shoved a hair behind her ear. “Okay . . .”

“I’m thinking Tommy Palmer might be able to help us find some information—if he truly is a community advocate.”

She raised her eyebrows. “Ranger said he had connections. It could be worth a try, right?”

Duke nodded slowly. “Maybe this somehow goes back to the Homestead Act and how that property was practically given away. If someone else had occupied that property first . . .”

“That could be reason to kill,” Andi finished, more excitement flashing in her gaze. “Do you think Joe is behind this?”

“If that deed is what ultimately led Craig to the killer and got him killed, then it has to be important.”

“Absolutely.”

“I’ll call Tommy and see what he says,” Duke said. “Because even though Joe has an alibi, we can’t forget that note we found. The one that said, ‘there were two.’”

“I think you’re on the right track.”

They shared a smile.

They were on to something, and they both knew it.

Andi felt the internal battle raging inside her.

She and Duke—and the rest of the gang—were inching closer to answers.

However, her time was dwindling away.

She slipped into her room for a moment and called Lockjaw. He answered on the first ring.

“Roads are still closed,” he announced. “There’s nothing we can do about it. Can’t even get a tow truck to you.”

“But . . .”

“Believe me, we’re all frustrated.”

But no one was as frustrated as she was.

How could she let this opportunity slip by?

Then she remembered Simmy. Remembered how important it was to her that she find out who had killed her father.

Even if she had the chance, how could she leave? How could she walk away from this?

And another part of her had to admit that the thought of walking away from this now brought her another level of disappointment.
