“Fuck, boss, these are fake.”

Uncle cocks his head. “You have the audacity to play games right now?” He raises his gun at Jace.

My heart thuds in my chest.

Jace takes a step forward, standing tall and strong. “We have a proposal.” His voice is soft but with an edge.

“A proposal?” Uncle snorts. “That wasn’t the deal.” His voice is a notch harsher.

Jace raises his palms, asking for attention. “Gordon terminated our contract. He refused to pay the money. Refused the negotiation. But Roey Torres, my employer, has an offer.”

“Piece of shit,” Uncle hisses.

My heart falls.

My father refused to pay for me? Not that I know him well, but what father wouldn’t agree to make a deal to get his daughter back?

“I figured he’d be smarter than that,” Uncle murmurs only for me to hear.

He’s simmering. His chest rises and falls. His fingers around the gun tighten. He moves his head slowly side to side like he’s cracking his neck, and I can’t see his face but I pray Jace knows how to handle this. Something is coming his way.

My eyes snap to Jace on the other side of the warehouse.

“Roey Torres offers his services—” Jace starts saying when Uncle shifts, and a shot echoes through the warehouse.

I scream as I duck in panic.

Across the warehouse Jace stumbles backward, his hand flying up to his shoulder.

“Jace!” I shout.

The goon behind Jace catches him and pushes him forward, but Jace twists and slams into him.

Uncle’s hand with the gun moves, following them, as Jace knees the guy and elbows him in the face, sending him onto the floor.

“Jace!” I scream as another guy charges at him.

Jace ducks and punches him in the gut.

Face punch. Elbow cut. Knee cut. He grabs the guy and twists him like a puppet, then uses him as a human shield.

The other goons cock their guns.

“You are making it complicated,” Uncle hisses and fires the gun.

I flinch, deafened by the shot, watching the guy Jace uses as a shield slide down onto the floor.

“Get him!” Uncle roars, his gun still pointing at Jace.

Uncle will shoot again!

My heart is hammering in my chest, blood pumping in my head.

Uncle cocks the gun, and I don’t hesitate even for a second as I dart out of my chair and tackle him, sending us both to the floor.

There’s a loud bang as the door is smashed open.

Another shot echoes.
