Her sugary voice is distracting. But in the position she is in, Reznik’s figure looms right above her.

“I have a clear shot,” I say.

“Go for it. We’ll deal with the girl later.”

This is what I did for four years overseas. While guys my age went to college, hung out with girls, and partied, I spent my time with my eye on the scope. A job is a job. I was the best at it, didn’t know better, and was running from my shitty orphan childhood.

But the girl distracts me.

No women or children—my heart gives an uneasy thud at the thought.

“Got you,” I murmur, focusing on Reznik, and squeeze the trigger at the precise moment the dog barks and the blondie in pink jerks to her feet.

“Fuck!” I exhale, horror washing over me.

The girl stumbles. Reznik asks her something, then looks around and takes off with the speed of light, his hurried footsteps fading into the night.

“Dammit!” I curse. “Roey, I shot the girl! Reznik’s on the run.”

We can’t chase him for fear of being injected with poison. The five million dollars we almost had in our hands is slipping away.

“Fuck!”Roey yells into my earpiece, his breathing strained as he starts running.

The girl stumbles toward the side of the building and slumps against the brick facade, the sedative working almost instantly.

I can’t believe this!

I couldn’t possibly have missed him!

Not tonight!

Three months of work!

Five million dollars!

No women or children.

The blondie topples over onto the pavement like a rag doll.

“What do we do?”I exhale in panic.

“Okay, listen, she knows him. We need to knowhow. She’s our only chance to find him again. Get the fuck down here.”

Two shadows, Roey and Miller, wearing black hoodies and baseball hats, hurry up to the girl’s body on the ground.

I set the rifle down on the floor, and in seconds, I’m down the stairs, out of the building, and trotting across the street.

No people in sight. No cars. Thank God!

Roey already picked her up and is holding her motionless body in his arms.

Miller rubs his face with both hands, murmuring on repeat, “Goddammit.”

“I don’t know what happened,” I apologize. “The freaking dog barked. She jumped up.”
