“Nope. The brothers will decide. Doesn’t hurt to have a couple different people standing.”

Another long drag of the cigarette. “So, you’re not standing against me?”

“Got no plans to. Why? Should I? You got crazy ideas for the club?” Rainer was joking, but he was surprised to see Dog’s face twitch as he asked.

“Not crazy ideas. I’m just gonna run the club like a damn Motorcycle Club. No more charity shit. Our members come first.”

“Well, that seems reasonable.” Rainer was being diplomatic, but he couldn’t help but feel as though Dog was saying some troubling stuff. Charity and community engagement had always been a big part of the MCs ethos. But it wasn’t his way to get involved in the running of the club.

“More than reasonable. That was why I wanted to get back into the City more quickly. I just wasn’t scared of conflict like Marcus was.”

Rainer felt a pang of anger — Marcus had been one of the bravest men he’d ever known. “Marcus was just more patient than you, Dog.”

Dog smiled, but there was something else behind his expression.

“That’s one way of looking at it.” He dropped the cigarette butt and screwed it into the dirt with a boot heel. “Anyway. I’ll be presenting my plan to the club. Glad to hear you’re not gonna get in my way.” He nodded at Rainer, then walked off.

A few moments later, Rainer heard the hum of an engine.

That pang of anger was still there, in his gut. It was growing. There was something about Dog, something about the way he’d said, “Our members come first,” that had set off an alarm in Rainer.

So, without knowing exactly what he was going to do, he decided he had to act. He jumped on his bike, revved the engine, and headed in the direction of Dog’s motorcycle.

The problem with streaming — or at least one of the problems — is that if you don’t stick to a regular schedule, you lose viewers. Fast.

Today, Esme was doing everything she could to engage the few viewers that she had, but no-one was nibbling the bait she was putting out.

“You’re telling me no-one wants a reading today? I mean sure, it’s not an astronomically significant date — it’s not like it’s Samhain — but there must be someone who wants me to throw a few cards down.”

Normally, she had a couple hundred people in her chat, pestering her to read for them, but today, there were just a few dozen. There was no chance of her getting her rent this month. None.

Oh well, that’s what fate had decided.

“I believe in me.” That’s what Rainer had said this morning. It had been in Esme’s head all day long. As bad thing after bad thing had happened to her, she’d been desperately trying to avoid taking responsibility for any of it.

But deep down, she had this annoying feeling that it was all her fault.

No, no, no, Esme, it’s not your fault. Listen to destiny, float down the stream.

Finally, fate decided to smile on her when TwistOfFate43 logged on.

TwistOfFate43:Hey gorgeous, glad to see you’re online!

“Hey Twisty, good to see you too.” It made her skin crawl a little when ‘random internet guys’ called her gorgeous, but she couldn’t complain too much. At least this guy was kind to her.

TwistOfFate43:You OK? Seem a little low energy.

For some reason, this question hit her hard. For a moment, she thought about shutting down the stream, and she even had to fight back tears.

Just then, another DM came through.

Come into a private chat with me. I want to make a donation. A big one.

Esme didn’t think twice. She shut down the stream and opened up a private chat window.

Esme:You there?

TwistOfFate43:I’m here, baby. You having a bad day?
