“Mill!” Chuck called out, when he saw that she was working with Thunder, “I told you to wait for me before you tried anything with him.”

“I’m sorry,” Millie said. “It was all going so well until the shouting started.

Takis and Chuck’s brothers arrived a few moments later, chasing behind Chuck. There was a weird atmosphere in the air. Chuck and Takis in particular looked as though they’d both been shouting. Their faces were red, and there was some kind of tension between them that Millie had felt before.

“Did he hurt you?” Chuck asked, standing close, stroking Millie’s cheek.

“No. He’s a good boy. He just got scared.” She turned to look at Takis. Surely he had to know what was going on now. Chuck was being open with his affection toward her. “Do-does Takis know?”

Chuck nodded. Then, he whispered to her, “I fucked up, baby.”

“I know everything,” Takis replied. “I’m sorry that all this happened, Millie.”

“Sorry?”

“You came here for sanctuary. I shouldn’t have paired you up with someone who would take advantage of you.”

“He didn’t take advantage of me.”

Chuck remained silent, his eyes staring down at the ground.

“I hate to say this, Little one,” Takis continued, “but in a legal, technical sense, he did.”

“I’m sorry,” Chuck said. “I’m sorry if you feel like I acted wrong. I was trying to do everything right. But I know I made mistakes.”

“Daddy, you didn’t.”

He looked up at her. His beautiful blue eyes were rimmed with red. “Babygirl, I’m not right for you.”

“You are!”

“No. There’s anger in me. So much anger. I just lost it, and I don’t think I can say for sure that I’m not gonna lose it again.”

“You’d never hurt me.”

“No, I wouldn’t. But I’m not stable right now. I can see that.”

Takis nodded. “It’s good of you to admit that.”

“Don’t talk to me,” Chuck spat. “I’m not ready to talk to you.” He looked back to Millie. “I’m leaving. Right now.”

“No,” she moaned. “Daddy, please.”

“There’s no argument,” he said sadly. “I’ve got work to do.”

“Then do it with me!” she pleaded. “No one’s perfect.”

She couldn’t help but notice Takis. His eyes were softening.

“Maybe we’re all being too hasty here,” the Greek said.

But Chuck wasn’t listening. “No. I’m done. I can’t be here anymore. I can’t be around things I know I can’t have. Things I don’t deserve.”

“But, Daddy,” she said, “no one deserves anything.” She held his hand, and for a moment, it felt as though she was getting through to him.

He looked from her to Takis.

“You love her, don’t you?” That was Takis, his eyes softening again.
