Trent’s grip on the shotgun was steady as he stared down at Brandon. He seemed like a mere shadow of his former confident self. But the danger wasn’t over yet. That idiot was still holding his gun.

“Give it up, Brandon,” Trent said calmly. “You don’t want to add murder to your list of crimes.”

“How did you even get in here?” Brandon asked, his voice shaking with fear and frustration.

Trent smiled. “I used to work here, Grouse. Tobias and I go way back. You might want to know that the staff here all think you’re an asshole. I’ve been hiding in the office next door.”

Brandon was shaking. “I... this bitch owes me ten million dollars.”

Trent snorted out a laugh. “Ten million dollars? And uhh... you think she’s got the money to pay you back?”

Brandon looked confused. “Wait... you mean, you don’t know?”

“Know what?”

Patti looked up at him, her eyes wide. “Trent,” she said, “there’s something you don’t know about me.”

Trent’s heart was pounding in his chest, as he kept the shotgun trained on Brandon. “You’re sitting on ten million dollars?”

“Um, it’s more like... fifty million.”

“Fifty?!” Trent almost choked on the word. “Jesus Christ, Patti! Are you serious?”

It was in that moment, when Trent was in shock from Patti’s revelation, that Brandon made the most stupid move imaginable. He dropped the gun and tried to make a run for it.

Trent immediately snapped out of his state of surprise and acted fast. He leaped forward, letting his own gun fall to the floor, and tackled Brandon to the ground before he could make it to the door. As they tumbled across the floor, Trent kept his grip tight on Brandon’s body. He pinned him down, keeping one hand firmly around his shoulder and the other pressed against his back as he struggled against Trent’s hold.

But no matter how hard he tried, Brandon couldn’t break free.

“Fifty million?” Trent said to Patti, still stunned by it. Brandon squirmed beneath him.

“It’s not that much,” she said.

“Are you kidding me?”

“Am I going to prison?” Brandon groaned from somewhere underneath Trent.

“Yes,” Trent replied simply, the word heavy with finality. “Now I’m going to get off you. If you try to run again, I’ll break your legs. Understand?”

“I understand,” Brandon said, sounding like a broken man.

Trent got up and dusted himself off, but before he could finish, Patti had thrown herself into his arms.

“How did you know I was here?” she asked, pressing herself tight up against his reassuring strength.

“Takis tipped me off,” he admitted. “Said that you might be angry with him, but he also said that he knew I’d want to be here. He was right.”

“I’m not angry,” Patti said, “I’m... I’m alive!”

Trent held her tight, feeling how the warmth and safety of her body mingled with his own. He kissed her forehead gently, before she pulled back to look into his eyes.

And then, they kissed.

Every inch of Trent had waited to feel this moment. His lips moved against Patti’s, the air around them electric with every sensation. The warmth from her body felt like a balm to his soul, and as their kiss deepened Trent could sense all his worries melting away. All the pain from the fire was gone, forgotten, immaterial.

She tasted sweet like honey on his tongue, and he pulled her closer enveloping her in a comforting embrace as they kissed. He wanted nothing more than to stay just like this, in each other’s arms forever, but reluctantly he knew that they had to move on eventually.

Even so, when Patti finally broke apart from him and leaned back slightly, there was still something special between them. In that moment where their lips were still lingering close together, Trent knew without a doubt that this might just be the most perfect moment of his life.
