The way the sun’s rays lighten his hair, his relaxed lips, and long, dark eyelashes; he is simply beautiful.

This man has slept with me all night, breaking one of his biggest rules yet.

Not wanting this touching moment to end, I drape his arm over my waist, and he pulls me closer in his sleep. His body heat sends a sensation of warmth through me. It feels sensational.

Pressing my face in the crook of his neck, I breathe in the heady, lingering after scent of his cologne. There is no place else I’d rather be than in his arms, protected, and safe. Snuggling into his firm body, it’s not long until sleep welcomes me once more.

Awaking, my eyes sleepily flutter open. His spot in the bed is vacant, and I am alone. I turn over and lay on my back, glancing around the room to see if I can spot him anywhere.

He is nowhere in sight.

The moment I step through the doorway to the living room, the brightness is entrancing. Through the glass wall, the sun beams in, creating a heavenly scene before me.

The sky is crystal blue, very few clouds anywhere in sight, and the mountains out in the distance have me in a state of serenity.I could surely get used to this life.

Suddenly, a figure appears from the corner of my eye.

Jaxon is standing in the doorway, quietly observing me. This man has captured a part of my heart and I know I must have captured a part of his. Today, I find myself happy to be alive.I made it out of my traumatic past alive, and maybe now is the time for me to let it go and move on.

I deserve to be happy and I deserve to be loved. I don’t want to punish myself for another minute. Since releasing my deepest feelings, and having Jaxon comfort me and tell me everything will be okay, I know that everything will be all right.

A small blush crosses my cheeks. “Morning, Jax.”

“Good morning.” His tone comes out edgy as I approach him. “Sleep well?”

“Yes, very.” Taking his shirt between my fingers, I stand on my tiptoes and softly kiss his lips. The second my eyes open, I’m taken back by the discomfort on his face. “What?”

“Sasha,” he says, stepping back.

Swallowing the lump in the back of my throat, something inside is warning me that this isn’t right. The way he’s staring into my eyes is different. Something has changed. My heart drops into my stomach as I grasp it, hoping I won’t fall apart.

“We should talk.”

“Alright,” I nearly whisper.

“I can’t do this.”

These words slip out of his mouth with ease, cutting me like a knife. My mouth falls open and just as I’m about to respond, he continues.

“I don’t like what we’re doing here. We’re playing games, toying with one another. It’s brutal, really. This is not a real relationship. This is a binding contract, a deal. This isn’t me. This isn’t who I am, Sasha. I don’t understand why I let it go this far. For that, I apologize.”

“What?” I ask, now glaring. “Who you are? What are you talking about?”

“I’m sorry.” He frowns. “Did I not make myself clear?”

“Jaxon,” I say, forcing a smile. “Come on. Don’t be like this.”

Once more, linking my arms around his neck, I press my lips against his. Running my fingers through his disheveled dark hair, he snakes his arm around my back, and then lightly pries me away from him.

I blink up at him, stunned.

“Please, don’t.” His brows furrow, and he exhales a sharp breath, pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers. “Just stop, Sasha.”

“What?” I croak, my heart sinking deeper. Stepping back, I hold my breath.

“Don’t make this any more difficult than it has to be. It’s redundant.”

My face beams red, hot. “After all day yesterday, the fun we had together, and dinner under the stars, you’re telling me none of that mattered to you?” I ask, astounded. “I told you what happened to my parents. I never told that to anyone—”
