But I remember Kade isn’t part of Rylan’s pack at about the same time that he gently leans me against the door before he eases out of me. "Don't move."

Holding myself up against the door when my knees don't want to work isn't easy, but in less than a minute, Kade is back from wherever he disappeared to.

I startle at the coolness of the damp cloth he swipes between my legs. "I made a real mess of you," he murmurs, dragging the cloth over my upper thighs.

My eyes close and I fight back a yawn. "I don't care."

He snorts a laugh before he grips my sweatpants and tugs them back up my legs. "Don't care about a lot, do you?"

His words make me pause. He's silent too, as if he's waiting for a response. "I used to," I say, my voice whisper-quiet.

He swings me into his arms and pulls open the door. "Won't live long with an attitude like that," he says.

And do you care about how long I live?

I search his face as he strides out of the changing room. How he's able to avoid the destruction when most of his attention is on my face, is a mystery. I’d have gone down after the first step if I was him. "Where are you taking me?"

"Upstairs apartment."

"Why?"

"There's a bed."

A flutter of excitement dances over my skin. "And what will we do in the bed?"

"You," he says, starting up the stairs, "will sleep."

"And you?" I ask as he takes the stairs two at a time. His gaze is lazy as he searches my face. There's male satisfaction there, but hunger too. He wants me again.

"Have things to do."

I turn away from him. "Because once you fuck a girl, you walk away and so does she."

He doesn't respond, and my heart spasms. Hard.

In the silence, he carries me up the stairs and into the apartment.

But when he steps into the bathroom and not the bedroom, I blink in surprise. "Kade?"

He walks us to the shower, and after reaching into the cubicle, turns the shower on. "I think I was pretty clear about me making a mess of you."

When he says it with his eyes on me, a blush prickles across my cheeks, and I look away. "Yeah, well, you cleaned me up," I mumble.

“I think we can do a little better than a damp cloth.”

After setting me down beside the shower cubicle, he reaches for the waistband of my sweatpants. He tugs it down, and they fall, pooling around my ankles. It would make more sense to ask me to step out of them, but he wraps his arm around my waist and lifts me with ease, using his foot to pull them off the rest of the way.

When he lowers me back to the cool tile, he reaches for the hem of my long-sleeve shirt. I grab onto his hands and don't let go, panic spiking through me.

I can't let him see all my scars. The ones on my neck and back are bad enough, but the one on my wrist...

No. I can't let him see.

Kade pulls one hand free, cradling the back of my head as he stares deep into my eyes. "You don't hide anything from me."

It's an order, nothing less, but his eyes...

I'm not seeing an order. I'm seeing someone who wants to protect me. Someone who wants me to know it. "I can't," I whisper.
