“I had to. This is important.”

“You better believe it.” The doorbell goes again and I groan. “I’ll see you later.”

I hang up and run to the door and open it without looking, sure for some reason that it’s Sam.

But it’s not.

A tired-looking woman is standing there, her hand on a teenage boy. “Is Sam here?”

I study her and close the gap in the door. “No, he’s not. Who can I say is calling?”

“I’m his ex-wife. And this is his son, Talbot.”

My stomach sinks and I switch my gaze to the boy, looking for anything that looks like Sam. The kid doesn’t look a bit like him.

But genetics is a lottery. And sometimes it takes a weird turn.

“I’m sorry. He isn’t here right now.”

She eyes me out of shrewd brown eyes. “That’s okay. I was kinda hoping to see you. Hopefully you’d be able to provide some income for us since we’ve had our budgets cut”

My brows lift. “I’m not a bank teller, lady.”

“Mrs. Vernon.”

“I don’t think you can keep his name after the divorce unless he agrees to it.”

She cocks her head and her bleached blond hair barely moves. She’s got lines around her mouth that tells me she smokes too. Disgusting habit.

“I’ve got to go. I’ve got an appointment. But if you want money from Sam after such a long time, you better make sure you’ve got what you need to prove what you’re saying. Judges frown on stuff being brought in that isn’t true.”

She eyes me shrewdly and I see her smile when she sees that I’m trying not to cry.

“I think you know that it’s true.”

“No I don’t. He doesn’t look anything like Sam. Come back when he’s here and try to tell him your story.”

I slam the door in her face and slide down it. A sob tears at my throat. I’m so confused. All of this has been really confusing. But I can’t believe that this woman shows up here when I just met Sam to tell him that he’s got a long-lost son. Something’s not right.

But I don’t have time to worry about it today.

Today I’m going to meet my sister. Alone. Because right now I can’t even stand the thought of seeing Sam and maybe hearing him say that he has a son he didn’t acknowledge either.

It doesn’t sound like the man I know but men are really strange, as I’m just figuring out.

CHAPTER9

Sam

Iget home and immediately I can tell that the house is empty.

“Lily?”

No answer. I look all through the house and see signs that she took some of her things with her.

Panic rises in me, choking me. Surely she didn’t leave me?

My phone rings and I pick it up. “What?”
