Peyton and Greer walked the outside perimeter of the home, checking for anything suspicious, even though the police already had. JJ slipped his hand into mine as we stood outside, while the police searched the interior. We didn’t talk, simply stood together and waited. He was the comforting presence I needed. I was unsettled as hell and pissed.

The officers exited the home. I had opened the garage as well. One of them went there while the other spoke to us.

“We didn’t see anything, but you have evidence to prove otherwise. If someone was in your home, they tripped the alarm but somehow managed to avoid most of the cameras, which would mean they’d been in there before to know where they are. We didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary that would imply someone was going through your belongings.”

“This isn’t the first time the alarm had done this. I thought it was a glitch since I got a new system. I didn’t bother having the alarm company call you before.”

“It’s solid tech,” Greer said, walking toward us with his brother. “I have the same system on my place and have never had this issue.”

“And you are?”

“Greer Lynx. My brother Peyton and I own a home not far from here. I put this system in myself. It doesn’t go off for no reason.” He ducked away, going into the house with Peyton behind him.

“Lynx,” the officer muttered. “That sounds familiar.”

“They own a home just north of here with a big iron gate at the end of the driveway,” JJ said. “Tall fencing too. The place is probably more secure than your barracks.”

“I know which property you’re referring to, Mr.…”

“Altair.” There was a tightness to JJ’s voice. His name didn’t come without a reputation. “Jordan Altair Jr. My cousin, Perry Altair, lives in that home with the Lynx brothers.”

It was so small I almost missed it in the exterior light of the home, but the officer’s jaw ticked. “I know the name.”

“I’m not my old man.” JJ’s need to defend himself was strong. He hated when people lumped him in with his dad.

“I’m not here for that.”

The other officer came back from the garage. “It’s clear. No evidence of tampering on the doors or windows. The inside didn’t seem to have anything disturbed. Mr. Dremest, if you notice something out of the ordinary or find you’re missing items, call us. And don’t hesitate to do so again if you think you have an intruder.” This officer seemed to want to get on my good side, due to my name carrying weight in the city and surrounding areas like this one. Unlike JJ, I was proud of my family and what they’d accomplished. I hated how he was constantly looked down at or feared, though he did use that fear to his advantage when need be.

I shook both officers’ hands and was given a card to contact them if I came across anything suspicious. When they pulled out of the driveway, JJ and I went into the house to find Greer and Peyton going over every inch of it.

“I have a detector back at the fortress I’m going to grab to sweep for listening devices,” Greer said, stopping in front of me. “I want to make sure nothing was planted but if I had to guess, it wasn’t. This was simply a look what I can do type of thing.”

“A what?”

“Someone broke in here because they could. They knew you had a security system, knew you had cameras. How they knew where they were, I’m not sure.”

“The officer said it might be someone I know since they were able to avoid the cameras for the most part.”

“Who else comes here besides X?”

“I have a housekeeper. She’s in her sixties and has ten grandchildren. I doubt she’s casing the place. Plus, she’s been with me for years.”

“You didn’t bring hookups here?”

I glared at him, but I shouldn’t have. He was covering his bases. “I’ve never brought a one-night fuck here. JJ had been here when we were together. I don’t let random people into my home.”

Greer sighed. “Dex, I’m not asking to accuse. I’m trying to figure this shit out, okay?”

I nodded, deflating.

“If it’s not someone who’s been here before, then whoever it is has been watching your home from close up. They’ve looked in the windows, made note of where things are.”

The couch called my name. It was too inviting to resist when the energy rapidly drained from me. I sat down while JJ talked with Peyton; Greer joined them. Tipping my head back, I closed my eyes and wracked my brain, trying to think of who’d been in here in the past few months or who’d have a reason to come in here. This whole alarm being tripped thing only happened during the past week. It was why I thought it was a glitch or false alarm. It started after Greer put the system in.

A kiss was pressed to my chin. I opened my eyes to find Greer there. “I’m going to run home. I’ll be right back. Tomorrow, I’m buying more motion sensors. I thought I had enough in here to cover it, but apparently not.”

“If whoever this is already knows what’s in here, what’s the point?”
