“Oh,” I say, shaking my head. “I’m not sure I’ll be able to come to Mexico after fleeing from my family.”

“Elias’ family runs the island. We could fly you in direct on one of their jets. There’s no way your father would find out.”

I nod. “Maybe. I’ll find a way to get in touch before then.”

Nat looks a little sad. “So we won’t be able to contact you at all?”

“Not until everything dies down.”

“How long will that take?” Eva asks.

It could take a good few years for my father to call off a hunt, as long as I make it that long without being caught. “Who knows? It depends how determined my father is to catch me.”

“This sucks,” Camilla says, unshed tears in her eyes. “So after tonight, it could be goodbye for years?”

I swallow hard. “I really don’t have the answers, but you can’t tell anyone. Not even your partners.” I glance at Eva and Elias. “It’s really important that until I’ve left, you say nothing.”

“Got it,” Eva says.

Nat nods. “Of course.”

Camilla sighs. “I’ll try, but I’m very bad at keeping things from Mia.”

I give her a pointed look. “You literally have to keep your mouth shut until tomorrow morning. Is it really that hard?”

She purses her lips together. “No, I guess not.”

Nat laughs. “You know how hard it is for her to keep her motormouth shut.”

Camilla grabs one of my throw pillows and chucks it at Nat’s head.

“That was uncalled for,” Nat says, grabbing it and throwing it right back.

Eva shakes her head. “Is this turning into a pillow fight?”

“Why the hell not?” I say, grabbing one and throwing it at Eva.

Eva gasps. “That is it, you are going down, Vasquez!”

I laugh and we all descend into silliness as we chuck pillows around the room at each other. This is exactly what I needed. A bit of mindless fun to take my mind off of the task ahead tonight.

* * *

My father is standingat my door half an hour before the ceremony.

“Hey, Adrianna.” He looks at my outfit. “You look well.”

I swallow hard. “Thanks for coming.” I glance down the corridor. “Where is mom?”

He shakes his head. “Your mother couldn’t make it.”

It hurts a bit, I must admit. Out of the two of them, I’d expect my mom to be here over my father. She may not have ever been emotionally supportive, but she’s always been a little less cold than him.

“Oh, is she busy?”

“No, but I don’t enjoy traveling with your mother. You know that.”

I clench my jaw. “I know that.” He doesn’t like to travel with her because he likes to pay hookers whenever he stays away from home. The man disgusts me, but my mother isn’t much better. Their marriage is a sham, and it has been all my life. Exactly what I want to avoid by escaping, as that was my future. My mom was married by arrangement to my father, hence the toxic relationship between them.
