“I’ll have a Diet Coke. And you?” He turned to Remi.

“Can I have a Dr Pepper? With no ice?”

“Of course, ma’am.”

“Thanks,” he said, pulling his card out of his pocket.

The server took it from him and nodded. “I’ll be right back, sir.”

“Thank you.”

Remi picked at the edge of her T-shirt. She’d changed out of her gray one. This one was black with the words, “It’s all fun and games until someone divides by zero” on it.

He motioned to it. “I like your shirt. Reminds me of the discussions we used to have in school.”

Remi smiled at him. “It’s funny, right? At least you get it. Brooke thinks I should burn all my T-shirts.”

Burn them? He glanced in the direction Brook had gone. “Why?”

“See?” Remi pointed at him. “I told her my T-shirts were cool. She says they’re a fashion faux pas. She thinks I need to wear designer clothing.” Remi scoffed.

Remi? In designer clothes? He couldn’t even imagine. Remi was so not like that. “What do funny T-shirts have to do with fashion?”

She smiled and it lit up her eyes. “I knew you and I were kindred spirits.”

Warmth spread through his chest. It had been so long since he’d been able to relax and be himself around anyone, and it seemed like he and Remi were picking up right where they’d left off. It felt so good. He wanted to know everything he’d missed. “What’s life like for you? Where do you work?”

“I work for Systems Tech.”

He sat up straight. “Really? That was your dream job. How is that possible? I didn’t think they had a branch in Silver Creek.”

“They don’t. I work remotely from home. It’s the best job. The commute takes no time at all, and I can work in my pajamas if I want to.” She gave him a cheesy grin.

He’d forgotten how funny Remi was. She had her own quirky sense of humor. “Sounds like heaven.”

“It is.” She reached up and tugged on her hair tie. It came out and her blonde hair spilled down to her shoulders. It was a little messy, but she didn’t fix it. “What about you? How are things going with the new movie? It’s called You’re Still the One, right?”

“Yes. It had a good release. You could say I’m working on the publicity for it while we’re here.”

He would love to tell Remi the truth about him and Liz, but his father would kill him if he said anything. He’d even made him sign a non-disclosure agreement. He’d have to pay his father a hundred thousand dollars if he breathed a word of it. It hadn’t seemed like a big deal at the time, but that was before he knew he’d run into Remi and Brooke, and now he regretted signing that thing.

“How much time off do you get in between movies?”

“Depends. Sometimes I don’t get a break at all. We’re looking at several options for our next project, but my dad doesn’t like any of the scripts we’ve been given.”

Remi raised her eyebrows. “Your father?”

He knew what the look behind her hooded gaze meant. Remi knew his father. “Yes. He’s my manager.” Oh, how he would love to change that. But he didn’t want to fire his own father. He’d look like a colossal jerk. And you didn’t go against his father. It simply wasn’t an option.

“How’s that working for you?”

Remi’s gaze held a deeper meaning. One he didn’t want to explore. So, he cracked a joke instead. “You still have a crush on Dr. Phil?”

Remi punched him in the shoulder. He should have known it was coming, but he was out of practice. “I don’t have a crush on Dr. Phil. My word. You’re so juvenile.”

He loved it when Remi got all riled up. Her nose scrunched in that cute way. “You have the hots for him, and you know it.”

“He’s interesting to listen to. That’s all.”
