Colton turned. “Wait, is that him? Over there?”

Remi jerked her head around. “Seriously? Is he here?”

He chuckled. “You’re so gullible.”

She punched him again, harder, but this time he was ready for it. “You’re so mean.”

“Why is it that you get all excited when you think Dr. Phil is here, but when you saw me, you hid behind the water fountain?” He tried not to sound affronted, but he had to admit it had hurt his feelings. Why had she run from him? Didn’t she want to talk to him?

Remi blanched and sat back in her chair. “Oh, that.”

There was obviously something she was keeping from him. It bothered him because they’d been so close back in the day. But time had changed things. “Yeah. What was that?”

“I just wasn’t expecting to see you so soon.” She squirmed in her chair. “Hey, look, here’s Brooke.”

Her sister walked up to them and sat back down on her lounge chair. She slid on a pair of sunglasses.

Colton went back to the conversation. “So soon? What does that mean?” Sometimes Remi talked in circles. It was hard to pull stuff out of her.

“Nothing.” She waved her hand. “You and Liz are dating? How long has that been going on?”

Colton glanced at Brooke, but it didn’t look like she was listening. “Uh, yeah. We’ve been dating for a bit. But it’s nothing serious.”

Remi looked him over. “Nothing serious?”

Had he said that? Did anyone overhear? He had to change the subject before he got himself into trouble. “How long are you guys here?”

“We leave Saturday morning.”

“Same as me.”

Remi’s eyes widened. “Really?”

“Seems like it was fate that we met.”

Remi slowly nodded and then stared down at the sand. “Yeah, fate.”

“Do you and Brooke want to do something tonight?”

Brooke suddenly sat up and smiled at him. “We’d love to. What do you want to do?”

He wracked his brain for something they could do that wouldn’t be caught on film by any paparazzi. “How about you guys come to my room and we can watch a movie or something?”

“Great. Yes. Let’s do.” Brooke sat back and closed her eyes.

Had Brooke looked happy because he’d included her in the invitation? She certainly jumped at the chance to spend time with him. Maybe she wasn’t as indifferent toward him as he’d thought.

If the stars aligned right, he might be able to fulfill a wish he’d made a long time ago. Maybe he could hit it off with Brooke.

CHAPTER5

The server handed them their drinks. Remi gripped the glass, her fingers turning white. Why was she so nervous around Colton? They’d been friends for a long time. It didn’t have to be weird.

Okay, it was weird. And it was all her fault. It was because she had spent the last five years doodling his name in her stupid book. Or staring at his picture. Or daydreaming about kissing him. Ugh. Now all she could do was stare at his lips. His very appealing, sexy lips.

Stop that. She shook her head and shoved her straw in her mouth. The bubbles burned her throat. That was okay. It was needed. She had to stop thinking about kissing Colton.

“Which room are you in?” Colton asked.
