He hung up the phone and pulled off his shirt. He hadn’t seen Remi since the Valentine’s singles dance at the community hall back in Silver Creek. That seemed like eons ago. Remi had been acting funny, but he couldn’t remember why. Odd. Why had he thought of that?

He slipped out of his wet shorts and tossed them onto his bed, but something white peeked out of his pocket. The paper his father had dropped. Curious, he pulled it out. Thankfully, it hadn’t gotten too wet, and he unfolded it. He didn’t recognize the slanted handwriting.

I know the truth about Colton. I know what you did.

A strange sensation shivered through him as he stared at the words. Just two short sentences. Yet it had a threatening nature to it. What did it mean, though? What truth about him? And what did his father do?

He tossed it onto the desk, unsure of what to think. If his father was getting threatening notes, he hadn’t told Colton about it. Maybe that was why he’d insisted on coming to Grand Cayman. His father could be worried about a stalker. He’d keep an eye out for anything that looked weird.

Colton pulled on a plain white tee, a pair of khaki shorts, and fished his sunglasses out of his bag. To be sure no one recognized him, he grabbed his baseball cap. After slipping into his sandals, he slid open the door and walked down his deck stairs. The sun kissed his skin, warming him.

Remi shielded her eyes as he approached. She looked quite uncomfortable sitting in the sun in her sweatpants. He held in a chuckle. She hadn’t changed a bit.

“Hey,” Remi said, motioning to an empty seat beside her.

“Hi.” He sat down, trying hard not to stare at Brooke stretched out on a lounge chair in her bathing suit. Dang, she looked good. She could sell the heck out of a bottle of sunscreen.

He didn’t want to be rude and not even acknowledge her, however, her eyes were closed and she appeared to be resting. After debating, he decided it was ruder to ignore her. “Brooke.”

Brooke opened her eyes and smiled. “Hi, Colton.”

“Getting sun?” Colton cringed. What a dumb thing to say. Obviously she was sunbathing.

“Yes.”

“What are you up to these days?” That was a better question.

“Nothing much.” She hopped up from her chair. “I forgot something in the room. I’ll be right back. Nice to see you, Colton.” As she passed her sister, she nudged her shoulder.

Remi just glared in return.

Unsure what that was about, he ignored it. It was probably just a sister thing. He turned to Remi, who had changed out of her wet gray sweats into another pair that looked exactly the same. He hid a chuckle. “You cold?”

Remi’s nose wrinkled. “No. I’m hot.”

He laughed. “That’s just like you. Why didn’t you wear shorts?”

“I didn’t bring any.”

And that was just like her as well. He smiled to himself.

“So, tell me how you’ve been. What have you been up to?” Her cheeks flushed. “I mean, I know you’ve been doing movies. Of course. I’ve seen them. I mean, I’ve seen you in them. Or rather, the ads. Uh, trailers. That’s what I meant. I’m not like a crazy stalker fan or something.”

How adorable. Remi was just the same as always. She rambled when she got flustered. “I’ve been good. What are you doing nowadays? What was all that about a honeymoon?”

If he hadn’t known better, he would have thought she’d been out in the sun all day with how red her face got. “I…uh…”

Guilt constricted his chest. He was prying. “You don’t have to tell me. I’m sorry for butting in. I didn’t mean to embarrass you.”

“No, it’s okay. You aren’t embarrassing me. I did a good job of that all on my own.” She lifted her gaze to meet his. “I was engaged to a man. Almost married him, in fact. But at the last minute, I couldn’t go through with it.”

Oh. He swallowed, unsure of what to say. It was weird to think of Remi with another man. Not that they had that kind of a relationship. They were friends. But he couldn’t think of Remi in a romantic relationship with someone. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” She scanned the beach, like she wanted to change the subject. “Are you thirsty? I thought I saw someone carrying a tray of drinks a minute ago.”

“Yes. Let me flag him down.” Colton raised his arm and searched for the server who had been by just a moment before.

A man wearing a shirt with the resort logo on it came over to them. “What can I get you, sir?”
