“Why wait?” She took a quick peek around the restaurant. “No one is listening to us.”

“It’s okay,” he said, holding up a hand. “It’s not that important.”

She gave him a last side glance. Obviously he wanted her to drop it. Fine. Whatever it was, he seemed nervous to talk about it, which made her even more curious. She’d just have to wait and see if he would tell her back at the resort.

He sat back in his chair. “What do you plan to do when you get back home?”

Her mind went blank. Was she supposed to have plans? Her only plan was to get Colton to fall for her, but she wasn’t going to talk about that. “I have no plans.”

“No plans?” His eyebrows rose.

Remi froze. “Why? Should I have plans?”

Colton shook his head. “No, I didn’t mean that. I guess, I figured you’d want to go somewhere else. Silver Creek is small. It might be hard to see Tavon all the time.”

Oh. Tavon. She hadn’t thought that far ahead. She’d always lived in Silver Creek. Where else would she go? She picked up her napkin. “I don’t have any plans at this time. I guess I’ll just see how things go.”

“And if they don’t go well?”

“Are you asking me to move to LA with you?” Remi couldn’t believe she’d blurted that out. Her cheeks instantly heated.

Colton coughed, like he’d choked on his spit. “Um, well, no…I mean…”

Remi laughed to try to lighten the mood. “Geesh, you don’t have to get so flustered. I was kidding.”

Colton regained his composure. “Well, why don’t you move to LA? You can do your job from anywhere, right?”

Was he really suggesting she do that? She stared at her water glass. “I don’t know. That sounds…crazy.”

“What’s crazy about it? There are lots of people who live in LA. And then we could see each other more often.”

He wanted to see more of her? “Really?”

“Yeah. We could go to movie premieres and stuff.”

The image of her and Colton showing up at a movie premiere popped into her mind. She could see Colton there, talking to the fans, smiling for the cameras, wearing something dashing that the fashion industry would talk about. But she couldn’t see herself clearly at all. Her throat closed as she realized why. She wasn’t movie premiere material. She couldn’t be suave or graceful. She wasn’t a fancy dress or high heels girl. She’d trip and fall in front of the cameras.

Her throat closed as she realized what this meant. She didn’t fit in Colton’s world at all.

She took a long drink of water, pushing away the thought. If she didn’t belong in Colton’s world, this whole trip was for nothing, and she wasn’t willing to admit that to herself. She just needed to figure out how to fit in his world. She could do it. All she needed was Brooke’s help.

She gulped the last of her water and set her glass down with a clunk. “Let’s go.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Before dessert?”

“I’m full,” she said, which was only a partial lie. She had room for dessert, but chocolate wasn’t what she wanted. She wanted to prove to herself that she could fit into Colton’s world. She could be flirty and fun and make Colton think of her as more than a friend.

She was ready to show Colton they were meant to be together.

CHAPTER22

Twilight was quickly fading, the darkness setting in, and Colton walked with Remi back to the resort, the sidewalk lit by streetlamps. The scent of seawater mixed with the smells from the restaurants carried on the breeze. Colton slid his hand into Remi’s once again. He couldn’t help himself.

He had noticed how she’d changed the subject when he mentioned moving to LA. Why had he even pressed the issue? He was coming on too strong again. He needed to take things slowly. The only problem was his heart wanted to rush into a relationship. He was falling hard for Remi, and he knew they were both leaving soon.

The dwindling time left with Remi made him want to get the most out of what he had. “If you won a million dollars, what would you do with it?” he asked, curious as to what her goals were.

“I’d buy more RAM,” she answered quickly.
