“Thanks,” I said as I took off my heels. “But you still scared me.”

She settled onto the couch as I picked up a spray bottle and rag and wiped down the pole. Once I was done, I sat in the chair across from her.

“I obviously wasn’t going to let you know I was here. You either would have stopped or held back what you were doing. And that dance was so raw and in the moment, I didn’t want anything to disrupt its beauty and power. So I let you keep expressing yourself without interruption.”

I reached over and grabbed a scrunchie out of my bag and pulled my hair into a messy bun.

“I woke up this morning dying to dance. It’s been a long time since I freestyled like that. It felt good.”

“Any particular reason you woke up feeling so…” She trailed off and gestured with her hands, her brows raised. “Inspired?”

My mouth curled up into a slow smile and I shrugged.

“Maybe.”

“Oh my God! You’re blushing!”

Anjannette stared at me with her mouth open then she let out a loudwhoopand jumped up from the couch to give me a big hug.

“I’m so happy for you.” She pulled back. “How was it?”

Apparently my smile was enough of an answer. She screeched and squeezed me again before settling back onto the couch.

“I’m so happy for you,” she said again.

I sat forward, removed my knee pads, and slipped them into my bag, trying to figure out what to say about what happened between Simon and me last night. We always tease each other asking about details, but we’ve never shared specifics, just the general feels.

“It was so much more than anything I’ve ever experienced.” I looked her in the eye. “Anjannette, I think I could really fall for him.”

She smirked.

“AndI thinkyou already have.”

I placed my head in my hands and groaned.

“What’s wrong?” she asked. “This is a good thing.”

“I know. It’s just scary.”

It was easier to say that last sentence with my face covered.

“Trust me when I say, I totally understand. You know how freaked out I was when I realized I was falling in love with Leo, and look how that turned out.”

I lowered my hands and looked over at her.

“This thing with Simon is justmore. All my prior relationships had a kind of angsty undertone. I never felt like I could one hundred percent be myself, you know?”

“Oh, I definitely know.”

“Simon is so sweet, and the way he looks at me…” I shook my head as I trailed off. “When Brian looked at me, I always felt like he was judging me, or making a mental list of my flaws. But Simon makes me feel beautiful.”

“That’s the way it should be.”

I heard the door to the building open, then voices sounded in the hallway.

“I didn’t realize the time.”

“It flies when you’re having fun,” she said as few of the ladies for the five-thirty class
