“Well hello Paul Bunyan.”

I stuck my tongue out at Granny Vi and flopped onto the couch.

“Very funny.”

“Where are you headed looking like a lumberjack?”

“Axe throwing.” I glanced down at my jeans, white T-shirt, and unbuttoned plaid flannel shirt. “Do I really look bad?”

“You look fine. I’m just having some fun,” she said. “Are you going to be in the woods? Will you be warm enough?”

“No, it’s inside. We’re going to Electric City Axe Throwing.”

I sat on the couch to put on my boots.

“There’s a place you go to throw an axe?”

“Yep.”

“What do you throw the axe at?”

“I’ve never been, but from what I saw online, you throw at a big piece of wood with a bullseye painted on it.”

“What will they come up with next?” She shook her head. “Are just the two of you going?”

“No, Leo rented out the whole place, so we’re tagging along with him, Anjannette, and whoever else shows up. Simon’s sister Shannon is visiting for the weekend, so she’s coming along too.”

“So you’re spending time with Simon’s sister but can’t bring him around your family?” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Hmmph, I see how it is.”

“First of all, it’s just Simon’s sister, not his whole flipping family. And it’s not like you haven’t met him. Second, I’m thirty-two years old. Does my entire family need to meet every guy I date at this point in my life?”

“I met him for a few minutes when he picked you up that one day, but your parents and brother didn’t. And I don’t think your age has anything to do with it. You’re spending a lot of time with this boy and it seems as if you like him. What are you gonna do, invite us to the wedding when the time comes and have us meet him there?”

I rolled my eyes and sighed. I’m not going to win this. Besides, even though we’ve only been together a few weeks, I think it’s safe to say that Simon and I have moved beyond dating and into a relationship. So it’s not out of the question that I should introduce him to my family.

Plus, he’s not like the other guys I’ve dated, thankfully. My family’s love language is busting ass and I was always worried they’d offend my exes. Like Granny Vi said, they were all “tall and muscular with a fragile ego.” Simon is much more secure and I don’t think harmless teasing will freak him out too much.

“Okay, let’s set something up. What are you thinking?”

I’m sure I shocked her by agreeing so easily, but she didn’t show it.

“Bring him to dinner tomorrow.”

“So soon?”

“Why not? It’s not a test. He doesn’t need to study.”

“I’ll see what’s going on with his sister.”

“Bring her too. We’ll all get to know each other.”

“Don’t get too far ahead of yourself,” I said.

Before she could comment, the doorbell rang. I stood and opened the door and found Simon standing there, dressed similar to me, except his flannel shirt is blue.

“Nice outfit,” I said.

His gaze skimmed down my body, then up before meeting mine again.
