“It looksmuchbetter on you.”

He leaned forward and gave me a quick kiss. Before I could say anything, Granny Vi’s voice came from directly behind me.

“Simon, I want you and your sister to come to dinner tomorrow.”

I stepped back and looked at my grandmother. She very obviously avoided looking at my face.

“Oh, okay,” he said. “I’m not sure what time Shannon’s leaving, but I’d love to come.”

“Perfect. Dinner is at four, but you can come over anytime.” Her eyes shifted between us. “In fact, instead of bringing Keera home in the wee hours of the morning, you can just sleep in and get here sometime after noon.”

Simon’s eyes rounded. I’m sure he has no idea how to respond to that.

“On that note, we’re gonna head out,” I said.

After grabbing my purse, I ushered him out the door.

“Bye Mrs. Jordan,” he said before I closed it.

“See you tomorrow, Simon.”

Simon

“Isn’t Shannon coming?”Keera asked when I settled behind the wheel.

“She’s driving herself over.”

Keera made a sound acknowledging my answer but didn’t say anything more. I started the car and pulled onto the street.

“I’m sorry about Granny Vi.”

“Sorry about what?”

“She kind of bulldozed you into dinner,” she said. “And also for the sleeping-in comment.”

“That comment was harmless, and I didn’t feel bulldozed. Dinner will be fun.”

She snorted.

“Just be forewarned, my family tosses sarcasm around like confetti.”

Keera dated two different guys in the ten years we worked together, and many Monday mornings were filled with her telling me about how some snarky comment one of her family members made upset them. Honestly, I never thought anything said warranted more than a chuckle, but her guys had trouble handling it.

I turned into the parking lot of Electric City Axe Throwing, pulled into a spot, and turned off the engine. After releasing my seatbelt, I shifted to face Keera.

“Your family doesn’t scare me. I grew up with Shannon.”

She chuckled at that last sentence, and looked a little relieved.

I gave her what was supposed to be a quick peck, but Keera bit my bottom lip as I started to pull away then opened her mouth over mine. Our tongues tangled and tasted, and I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her closer to deepen the kiss. I only got to enjoy that for a second when someone banged on my window.

Jumping back, I released Keera and looked over my shoulder. Shannon stood just outside my door with a big smile on her face, waving. I flipped her off and turned back to Keera.

“See what I mean?”

She glanced over my shoulder and a big smile spread across her face.

“You just might be okay with my family.”
