“They laid me off last year.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Thanks. It worked out for the best though. I’m here doing what I love.” Wanting to end this conversation, I said, “You’re all checked in under your name.”

“Great.” She started to leave then turned back around. “I’m surprised Simon didn’t mention you weren’t working with him anymore.”

I frowned.

“When would he have mentioned it?”

“I got a new computer a couple months ago and he came over to hook it up to the system he put together in my home office, then we had lunch and got caught up.”

A couple women stepped behind Zoe and we ended the conversation there so I could take care of them. I did my best to hide my shock at what she just told me as I checked the final students in.

I had no idea she and Simon were still in touch. As far as I knew, they broke up and that was it. In my experience, hanging out with an ex just causes trouble. Before I could mentally spiral out of control thinking about it, Anjannette signaled that it was time to start. I stood and walked over to the front of the room.

“Thank you for being here, everyone,” Anjannette said. “This is our inaugural beginner series. Which basically means that you’re our Guinea pigs.”

Everyone laughed at that, even though it’s partially true.

“This is an eight-week series that builds upon itself week after week, so try not to miss a class. We emailed a schedule but I want to take a second to go over it. We’re here every Saturday from ten to noon except Thanksgiving weekend. The last class is the Saturday before Christmas.” She looked at me. “Anything you want to add?”

What I want to do is call Simon and ask him why the fuck he’s hanging out with his ex-girlfriend. But instead, I put on my happy face and said something inspiring.

“I just want to warn you that this is hard. Anjannette floats up that pole and makes it look easy, but it’s not. And sometimes it hurts. Hell, mosttimes it hurts. But it’s so worth it. So even if we show you something and you don’t get it the first time, just keep on trying. Eventually you’ll get it and you’ll be stronger in the process.”

“Okay,” Anjannette said. “Now that Keera has scared the hell out of you, let’s get warmed up.”

Simon

Keera came outside as soonas I pulled up to the curb. I usually walk up to the door when I pick her up, so I was surprised to see her heading toward me. Scrambling out of the car, I ran around the front and opened the door, giving her a quick kiss before she settled into the passenger seat.

I got behind the wheel and smiled over at her.

“I can’t wait to hear about the beginner class.” I started the car. “How did it go?”

“It went well.”

Her flat tone had me concerned. In fact, something has seemed off with her all day.

She answered my call with a text and my texts with one-word answers. That’s definitely not normal for Keera.

“You okay?”

She shrugged. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with women, but I know enough about them to realize a shrug with no words is never good.

“Did the class not go well?”

“No, it was good.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

She was looking out her window and I didn’t think she was going to answer, but after

several minutes, she spoke.

“Zoe is in the class.”
