Even though he’s not athletically inclined, Archer is basically a sports savant. He loves watching most sports and he has stats memorized for them all. He also studies the physics of the games because he finds it fascinating. That’s a quote from him.

Eve and Sophie joined us and a few minutes later a couple I never met showed up.

“Simon, Andrew, Archer, this is Rosa Wright and her husband Mason. Rosa is one of our favorite students.”

We shook hands then settled in around the table again. Soon it was filled with food and drink and everyone was having a great time, even Archer.

I kept a close eye on Keera, who was acting more like her usual self. Thankfully there was no sign of her earlier upset. Hopefully I reassured her that she has nothing to worry about. I’m a one-woman man and she’s most definitely the one woman for me.

CHAPTER20

Keera

I satagainst the wall and watched Sophie and Eve go through their routine. What there is of it anyway.

They’re doing a doubles routine to “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield in this year’s recital. The song is appropriate on a couple levels for the women. First, they’re both authors and second, they’ve both recently divorced and are basically starting their lives over.

“So what do you think?” Sophie asked. “What can we add?”

“I like what you have so far. You’ve done a great job figuring out things you can do together on the same pole. Now you can add things you can do on your own pole. For instance, where she sings ‘release your inhibitions, feel the rain on your skin’ later in the song, I think it would be really cool if you added synchronized drops.”

They looked at each other then both nodded at me. Since they like that, I continued.

“If you want to work on spin pole, you could add some cool spins. Maybe three or four flowing into the other. Just off the top of my head, start off with a skating spin, then climb to the top and do a genie, then a cupid, and a fireman’s spin down to the floor.”

We listened to the song a couple times and I tried to picture some choreography in my head. I don’t want to totally change what they’ve done so we just worked on adding to it. Putting them on separate poles made that a lot easier.

When Anjannette walked through the door, I realized our hour was almost up.

“Why don’t you do a drop to see how in sync you can be?”

Anjannette sat next to me and we watched them climb the pole, settle into a pole sit, curl into a ball, and drop.

“Not bad,” I said. “You weren’t totally in sync, but since this recital is just for fun, it’ll work. Now try the spin combo we discussed.”

As I expected, the spins need some work. Sophie is spinning faster than Eve and it’s throwing off the rhythm. They reached the floor within a second of each other, so that’s something.

“You guys look good,” I said. “We just need to tweak a couple things, add some floor work, and you’ll be good.”

“Can we do that in six weeks?” Eve asked.

“Five weeks because we’re off for Thanksgiving.” Sophie added.

“You’ll be fine.” I stood and stretched out my legs. “The hard part is figuring out what to do. After that, it just takes practice.” I looked at Sophie. “You did this last year so you know the drill. Tell Eve to trust the process.”

“I’ve never been in a dance recital in my life,” Eve said. “I don’t know how I let you talk me into this,” she said to Sophie. Then she looked at Anjannette and me. “Or how I let the two of you talk me into being in the intermediate class dance.”

“It’ll be fun,” Anjannette said. “You’ll see.”

“Who else is in the class dance besides us?” Sophie asked.

“Chelsea, Paisley, Tasha, Tabitha, and Phoebe. And of course, Keera.” Anjannette looked

at the clock. “Everyone should be here in a half hour or so.”

“I’m going to hit the bathroom,” Eve said and Sophie joined her as she left the studio to hit the ladies’ room across the hall.

We’ve scheduled the practices with enough of a gap between so if one group runs late it doesn’t screw up the whole schedule. Plus it gives people participating in multiple dances a chance to rest in between.
