I walked over to the desk and grabbed my purse, hoping to find a granola bar or something to eat but came up empty.

“Do you have anything to eat?” I asked Anjannette. “I’m starving.”

“No, sorry,” she said.

“Do you think I have time to run to the store and grab something?”

“Go. I can handle things for a few minutes if you’re not back. You need to eat so you don’t faint.”

“Yeah, I wouldn’t want to break one of your class rules.”

I slipped on my shoes, picked up my purse, and headed out the door. Before I got to the exit, the big door opened and a man walked in carrying five trays of pizza. The foyer filled with smells of cheesy, tomato-y, and garlicky goodness and my mouth watered.

It took all my willpower not to grab a tray and run. After all, the owner wouldn’t be able to chase me without dropping the other pizza. That thought had just left my head when the man carrying the precious cargo peeked his head around the stack.

“Simon?”

Simon

“Let me help you,”Keera said.

She loosened my load by taking the top two trays off the stack.

“I know you’re going to be here until at least eleven so I figured I’d bring you ladies something to eat.”

“You are a godsend. I’m starving and was just running to the corner store to grab something.” She took in a deep breath and moaned. “Is this Vince’s pizza?”

“It is.”

“My favorite.”

I followed her into the studio and set the boxes down on the desk next to hers.

“Simon, you win the best boyfriend of the day prize,” Anjannette said. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Keera pulled paper plates and napkins out of the drawer and set them on top of the desk.

Anjannette grabbed three bottles of water from the mini-fridge.

“Oh no, this is for you,” I said. “I didn’t plan on staying.”

“You have to at least have a slice,” Keera said. “Unless you have somewhere to be.”

“Nope, I’m just going home.”

She handed me a plate with two slices.

“Then please stay.”

How can I refuse an invitation like that?

“Do I smell pizza?” Sophie asked as she and Eve walked through the door.

“You do,” Keera said. “Simon brought us sustenance.”

They looked at me.
