She leaned forward and grabbed the wing bites container then handed it to me with the top popped open.

“Eat.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I reached into the bag and pulled out a plastic fork, then stabbed a piece of chicken and shoved it into my mouth. I speared another and held it out to her. She took it and smiled at me as she chewed.

“I’m really happy you came over tonight.”

“Me too.”

We watched TV and finished most of the food.

“I’m so stuffed,” Keera said, as she shifted next to me.

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders and she rested her head against my chest as another episode of Gilmore Girls started. This has never been my favorite show, but watching it like this with Keera makes it much more palatable.

“This is my absolute favorite episode.”

“Why’s that?”

“It’s the one where Luke and Lorelai kiss for the first time.”

She wrapped her arm around my waist and snuggled closer.

As the show went on, I mentally chuckled at the parallels between Luke and me. He’d been secretly in love with Lorelai, but for years they remained just friends and dated the wrong people. And like Luke, I finally grew a set and asked Keera out. However, I don’t plan on screwing things up the way the fictional couple did.

The show ended and Keera pulled back to look at me. Her eyes shimmered with tears and I reached up to wipe one that had escaped from her cheek.

“Why are you crying?”

“Fucking hormones,” she mumbled as she swiped at her eyes. “I’ve watched this episode a million times and never cried but now…”

“Now what?” I asked when she didn’t seem inclined to finish her sentence.

“Between my hormones and this thing between us, I’m all sappy.”

“‘This thing between us?’”

“It’s definitely a good thing.” She shifted her eyes to my chest and took in a deep breath then let it out. “Growing up watching this show, I looked at Luke as the ideal man. He was always there for Lorelai, even when they were just friends. Even when he was angry with her. He’s truly perfect. I always wanted someone like him.” Her mouth curled up into a shy smile as she met my gaze again. “And now I’ve found someone like him.”

Her eyes widened when I laughed out loud and she started to pull back. I wrapped my hand around her shoulder and held her in place.

“No, I’m not laughing at what you said. I mean, I am, but not for the reason you think.” I kissed her forehead. “During the whole show, I kept thinking about how our relationship is so similar to Luke and Lorelai’s.”

“Really?”

I nodded.

“The only thing Luke did wrong was lose the woman he loved because of misunderstandings and miscommunications. I’m not gonna let that happen.”

She blinked. Then blinked again.

Since I opened that door, I should walk through.

I slid my hand over to stroke her cheek.

“I love you, Keera.”
