“Go stretch. That will help.”

They went and joined the rest of the ladies as they stretched on the floor. The last few

students arrived and I closed the laptop and stood. Anjannette looked over the room then walked over to me.

“That’s everyone, right?”

“Yep, the gang’s all here.”

“Let’s get started then.”

Last week we practiced climbing, had them get comfortable walking around the pole, and taught them how to do different versions of the step-around spin. Today, we’re adding a back bend at the end of the step-around then we’ll show them the fireman spin. If there’s time, we’ll introduce a fan kick.

We started off with some warm-up exercises, then got to it. Using the instructor’s pole, I demonstrated the basics of climbing again.

“Okay, group one started last week, so group two, grab a pole and give it a try,” I said.

Starting at opposite ends of the room, Anjannette and I gave tips as the ladies tried to climb the pole with different levels of success.

“Group one, you’re up,” Anjannette said after a few minutes.

After the poles were wiped down, the groups switched.

“Remember, squeeze the pole between your knees and push up,” I said.

Again, they all gave it their best shot, but in the end, no one made it to the top. None of them gave up though, which is a good sign for future tricks. It’s only going to get more difficult as we go on. But this seems like a great group of ladies. They’ve been cheering each other on and really seem to be enjoying themselves.

By the end of class, they’d all pretty much perfected the fireman spin and at least got to try the fan kick. Since this is the last class of the day, we told them they could stay and practice for a little while. Sophie and Eve are coming in to work on their routine, but that’s not for another hour.

About half stayed. Most were interested in climbing. Which I get. I was obsessed with it when I started too.

“Keera, could you watch and make sure I’m doing this right?” Sacha asked.

I watched her mount, then try to climb.Trybeing the operative word. Using the pole next to her, I showed her what to do again.

“You want to put your grip higher and keep the pole between your knees and squeeze as you push up.” I demonstrated what I just said, then did it again, moving up some more before sliding back down. “Now you try.”

She was able to move up a little but just couldn’t hold on.

“Shit, that hurts.”

“Your skin will get used to it,” I said.

She looked down at thepole kissesdotting her shins and the inside of her knees. I rarely get the bruises anymore, but my body was covered with them when I first started.

“I hope so,” she said with a chuckle.

“Get some arnica cream. It really does help.”

“I’m gonna give it another try,” Zoe said.

Sacha and I stepped back to give her space.

She placed her shin against the pole and pushed up, squeezed her knees together, and pushed up a tiny bit more.

“Keep going,” I said.

Inch by inch, she moved up to the middle of the pole. She wrapped her arms around it and hung there, laughing.
