He rattled off the number and I handed him my credit card. It’s definitely more than I’ve ever spent on a Christmas present, but hopefully this will be a family heirloom someday. After signing the receipt, I took the small bag Lucas had placed the bracelet in.

“Tell Jane I said thank you and Merry Christmas if I don’t see you.”

“I’ll definitely tell her and Merry Christmas to you, too.”

I got back in the car and reached over to place the bag in my glove compartment. Keera and I are going to order takeout and watch a movie. Granny Vi’s house isn’t too far from the jewelry store, so I was standing outside her door in no time. Keera opened it, looking adorable in black leggings and an oversized Peaches & Pole sweatshirt.

“Hi,” she said and stepped back so I could enter.

“Hi.” I leaned down and kissed her. “Your tree looks nice,” I said.

“Thanks.” She sighed. “I love Christmas, but it’s coming too fast. I’m not ready.”

“Yeah, that seems to happen every year. It seems to come faster and faster.”

I followed Keera’s lead and settled onto the couch.

“The food should be here any minute. I ordered it about a half hour ago.”

“What’d you decide on?”

“I had a craving for pad Thai.”

“Sounds good,” I said then looked around. “Is Granny Vi here?”

“No, she’s gone out with Izzy.”

I shifted closer to Keera, but the doorbell sounded before I could kiss her. She looked at me with wide eyes then stood to go answer the door.

“What do you want to drink?” she asked as she set the bag down on the coffee table.

“Water is fine.”

She returned with two bottles and handed one to me then sat on the other side of the couch, curling her legs onto the cushion between us. I reached into the bag and handed her a container.

“Chopsticks or fork?” I asked.

“Chopsticks.”

I handed her a set then grabbed one for myself along with my food and sat back.

An old episode ofFriendswas on and we watched while we ate. For a few minutes anyway.

“Simon, I want to talk to you about something.”

“Okay.” I set my chopsticks on top of the container. “What’s up?”

“Something I discussed with Dr. Green on Tuesday.”

As she toyed with her food, I stayed silent and waited for her to speak. It seemed to take forever, but she finally did. And at first what she said didn’t seem so serious, but as she continued, it became more obvious that it is. To her anyway.

I’ve been on the other end of an “it’s not you, it’s me” speech before, and it kind of sounds like that’s what this is.

“Keera, it’s natural to be a little jealous, don’t you think?”

After I asked that, I realized what a stupid question it is. If she didn’t think so, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

“It’s not exactly jealousy I feel. It’s…” She trailed off then shifted forward to set her container on the table. “It’s more than that. And none of what I’m feeling has anything to do with you or something you’ve done. You’re perfect. I’m the one who’s screwed up.”
