“Sounds great. I’m looking forward to working together and getting a little free time back. Have a good day, Reid and I’ll see you soon.”

“You betcha, Chayse. I’m definitely stoked to get this one started. Have a good week and we’ll see you Friday.”

Chapter Nine

Cash

“Heyman!Thislooksgreat!” I just got to the job site after Penny’s appointment. Her doctor said the ER did a great job and to just stay the course for now which was a relief. She’s doing pretty good with her scooter, so I decided to drop her off with my sister. Reid and the guys are at our total house reno and it’s looking amazing. We’re close to the finish line and will finally be able to split some guys off to work on some smaller jobs. Reid had a meeting today with a new potential client to help with a flip that’s taking too long. I can’t wait to see how it went.

“Thanks, man. The guys got a ton of shit done while I was at the appointment, and you were with Penny. We’re ahead of schedule and should be completely done by next week. I honestly can’t wait. I loved redoing this house, but I hate the long jobs. You know how I get a little stir crazy. Speaking of, you’re going to love getting your hands on this craftsman.”

“That’s great news. So, we got the job?”

“Yep, and it’s right up your alley.” I’ve known Reid long enough to be wary of the shit eating grin that’s crossing his face right now.

“Ugh, did they destroy the house thinking they were the next Chip and Jo or whoever the hell is popular now?”

“Actually, the complete opposite. She’s doing a kick ass job, but just wanted some help. She completely re-did the one bathroom, with the help of her sister, and the tile work is fucking amazing. Seriously, dude. If they both didn’t already have jobs they loved, I’d try getting them on our crew.”

“Damn, that’s high praise, especially coming from you. I know how picky you are about who we hire.”

“Hey, I have to be! That’s our names on the sign and paying the bill. We can’t afford to have anyone come in and ruin everything we’ve worked for.”

Raising my hands, I know I’ve pushed him too far. “Whoa, I get it and I’m not complaining. Just giving you a little shit. So does that mean we get to start on the craftsman this week?”

“Yep, I told her we would be there Friday at 8:30.”

“Cool, are we both going over?”

“Yeah, I figured that way we can come up with a game plan and you can help me figure out who to use for which jobs. I told her we’d be able to get it done in 4-5 weeks.”

“Sounds good. What’s her name?”

“Um, shit. I don’t remember. It was different but her last name was Williams or Wilson. Something like that. I’ve never seen her before, but she seemed to be around our age. Do you want to go upstairs and check on the guys? They were finishing the tiles in the one bathroom and the trim work is waiting for you.”

“Sounds good. Let’s get this shit done so we can move on and keep adding those clients and expanding our business!” I bump Reid’s fist and head upstairs to get some shit done.

“Hey, are you almost here?”

“Yeah, I’m running about 15 minutes late, but she said on Tuesday that she would leave the back door open so we could just come in. She was supposed to be done with work at 7:30 but said it isn’t uncommon for her to have to work overtime.”

“Okay, I don’t see a car, but I guess I’ll just head in and holler.”

“Sounds good. See you soon.”

Even though I feel strange about going into someone’s house who I never met, I trust Reid. I walk past an awesome hot tub with Edison lights strung around the back deck that’s surrounded by a privacy wall on the side. It’s a pretty awesome set up. The back door leads into a rough mud room. Reid said we are going to spruce it up and move the laundry up from the basement and put it in here. It makes sense and would fit well. I wonder if she would be cool with me doing some built in cubbies to help differentiate the mud room from the laundry aspect.

The mud room leads into a half-finished kitchen. The floors are in good shape and the cabinets are painted an awesome green. According to Reid, we’re going to do concrete countertops and white subway tile for the back splash. The best part is she already has the material ordered so we don’t have to worry about sourcing and trying to get the best price for those. Peeking into the dining room, I thought I heard something coming from upstairs.

“Hello?” Nobody answers so I keep walking through the downstairs to see what we are working with. The dining room is separated from the living room by gorgeous pocket doors. One looks a little wonky, so I give it a tug and it doesn’t move. Looks like I will be tackling those sometime over the next few weeks.

The living room also needs the floors refinished and painted. It’s got some gorgeous built-ins that are painted a god-awful pea green. Hopefully she wants those refinished as well. Making my way over to the stairs, I notice some of the boards are missing. I’m assuming she pulled those up to fix, but that’s definitely one thing I will be addressing immediately. After Penny’s fiasco with the stairs and railing, I’m not in the mood to piss around with them.

I make my way upstairs when I hear what sounds like water shutting off. Shit, the last thing I need is for her to think I’m some kind of pervert sneaking in on her.

“Hello!” Damn, no answer. I’m slowly making my way through the first doorway of what must be the spare room when the en-suite bathroom door opens, and steam comes billowing out. I’m completely distracted by the creamy skin of a curvy, strong thigh that I almost miss the scream and something flying at my face.

“Who the fuck are you and why are you… oh shit.”
