“Alright, well I’ll send you my work schedule and get an extra key made. Landon has my extra one and I have a feeling he’s not going to give it up.”

At that, I can’t help but laugh because I can see him shutting that shit down. “How’s he doing? Penny and I were actually going to see if he wanted to come watch this one play baseball next week.”

“Oh, he’ll fucking love that. Hot guys in baseball pants are right up his lane.”

“I figured as much.”

“Alright, well I’m going to get out of your hair. Please lock the back door when you’re all done. Reid, you have my number and email.”

“Thanks, Chayse. I’ll get you our schedule by the end of the day.”

As soon as she’s gone, I turn to my best friend. “I fucking hate you right now!” Meanwhile, Reid is laughing his ass off because apparently, this is funny as shit to him.

“I really am sorry for tricking you, but this is too good of a job to pass up. But I’m calling it right now. You my friend, are so fucked. I was around you two for five minutes, and the chemistry is palpable.”

“Fuck off. I can’t go there. I don’t want to date, and it would be unprofessional now that she’s our client.”

“You tell yourself whatever you need to stay in denial.”

“Fuck off. Let’s get this started so we have a better plan going forward.”

Chapter Ten

Chayse

“Fuckyou,LandonDouglas!”Maybe that wasn’t the nicest voicemail I ever left my best friend, but I’m ready to strangle him for the stunt he pulled by giving me Cash’s partner’s business card. We haven’t had a shift together in five days and he hasn’t picked up my calls. I know it’s been hell at work lately, but the chicken shit is definitely avoiding me.

I’m so glad that it’s Wednesday and my day off. My sisters and I are going to go to the state park to hike to a waterfall and just enjoy one of the last days of summer. Then we’re heading out for drinks and dinner after. I’ve been looking forward to this day since we planned it at our last family dinner and need their opinions on how to handle this mess with Cash.

I suppose mess isn’t really the correct word, but the last two days with him being in my space has been HELL. It’s like my body knows as soon as he walks into my house. Don’t even get me started with what it does when I actually see his stupidly handsome face. Ugh, it’s like his smirk has a direct link to my lady bits.

So, did I sneak out of the house first thing this morning so I didn’t have to see him? Definitely, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Besides, it’s been forever since I have been able to go to the local coffee shop and get a hot chai latte and take my time drinking it.

I told the girls I would drive today since I have the truck which will be easier to get to the state park. I’ve loved trucks before I could even drive so it was a no brainer when my dad asked me if I wanted to fix up an old truck together as my first vehicle. I had so much fun working on that truck with him. Unfortunately, I wrecked it coming home from college and it was damaged beyond repair. Now I have a sensible tacoma that’s great on gas, but I’m also able to haul everything I need for the house.

Emerson had a few things to do at the shop this morning, so I’m picking her and Spencer up there. I love the shop. We’ve all spent so much time here and have done so much growing up in the shop. We learned how to change a tire and someone’s oil and how to navigate dealing with customers from every walk of life in every different social class. Our dad was amazing at treating everyone with respect and helping wherever he could. It’s probably why we all choose careers that serve others.

As soon as I pull up, I see dad’s feet hanging out from under a car and Emerson’s hanging out on the other side.

“Em, I thought you said you had some paperwork to do. If that’s what your paperwork looks like, I may need to switch occupations because writing nurses’ notes is rough!”

“Well, Chayse, you know you’re more than welcome to come join the family business. But I’d be pretty damn disappointed if you left your position where I know you help so many on a daily basis.”

“No need to worry about me quitting my day job, Dad. You know I love working here with you and Emerson, but I love working on cars as a hobby and a stress reliever. If I did it every day, then it would just be a means to an end, and I’d absolutely hate for that to happen.”

“Me too, baby girl. But I don’t think any of you girls could ever fall out of love working on a vehicle with your old man.”

I can’t help but grin back at my dad with his coveralls tied around his waist and a grease stain on his undershirt. He does have a point, though.

“Yeah, you’re probably right, but we all know Emerson is the best choice to carry on the family business. Those little hands of hers are perfect for getting into all of the tough to reach spots when working on the vehicles.”

“She’s definitely got a point there, Dad.”

I can’t help but laugh at her as she holds up her hands that are covered in grease before she grabs a rag from her back pocket to wipe off her hands.

“Are you ready to go, squirt? I haven’t had a perfect summer’s day off in ages! I can’t wait to hit the trails and the water together.”

“Yep! I just need to wash my hands. Let me go in and do that and I’ll tell Spence you’re here. She was looking at the accounting. I still haven’t really gotten the hang of the new system yet. Plus, this guy decided tohelp me outand ended up making it worse.”
