I reach into my purse and grab my kindle out of it. I don’t get to read nearly as much as I would like now that school started, but that doesn’t stop me from adding books to my ever-growing TBR list. I’m so caught up in my latest small town romance that I don’t even realize that Maverick is standing in front of me watching intently until he clears his throat. I notice my ice tea is sitting on the bar beside me with something delicious and fried sitting beside it.

I’m a little embarrassed that I didn’t even notice him standing there, but it’s not hard for me to get absorbed in a book when I’m reading. I smile slightly as I slide my kindle onto the bar.

“Um, how long were you standing there? I didn’t mean to be rude, but I always get sucked into my books and the world kind of fades away around me.”

“Long enough to watch you furrow your brows in concern only to relax as the most subtle, but stunning smile graced those gorgeous lips.” My cheeks instantly heat, and I don’t know if it’s from embarrassment or from Maverick’s compliment. If I’m being honest with myself, it’s probably from both.

“Hmm, sorry about that. What did you bring me?”

“These are my take on hot cheese balls with homemade ranch. Instead of just using pepper jack cheese, I get some delicious cheese from one of the local farmers. You remember me talking about Gage, right?” I nod my head and he dives back in. “It’s actually from his grandpa’s farm. I use it and some jalapenos and then make my own batter and fry them to perfection. They’re one of my favorite spinoffs from a traditional bar food.”

“What’s that?” I point to the second container of dip. This one is red and almost looks like it’s some kind of fruit dressing.

“For those who are a little more adventurous, that’s my homemade raspberry sauce that pairs perfectly with the spice from the jalapenos.”

“Mmm, that sounds delicious.” Even though I love ranch and I know Maverick’s is delicious, I’m intrigued by the raspberry sauce. My first bite explodes with flavor, and I get exactly what he means about the tangy sauce pairing perfectly with the creamy, spicy fried goodness. I can’t help the moan that escapes my mouth.

“Damn, Sweets. You keep moaning like that and I may need to take you on a tour that ends in my office to take care of my dick that’s ready to rip out of my pants and slide in between those pretty little lips of yours.”

I’m dead. I’m flushed, panting, and can’t resist trying to rub my thighs together to relieve the throbbing. How can he say such filthy things so casually with all these people around? I don’t even realize I’m sitting there gaping at him until he uses one of those long fingers to slowly close my mouth.

“Yeah, baby, that’s not helping me at all. I can tell that you love what I’m saying, but as much as I want to watch you choke on my cock, I’m the only one behind the bar until the trivia crowd starts trickling in, and once I get started with you, I’m not going to want to stop.” He makes a show of turning away from the other patrons, but making sure I can see as he adjusts his dick to sit more comfortably in his tight black jeans. Even though he just adjusted, I can still see how bad he wants me. Before I can say anything crazy, he gives me a quick kiss and heads back towards the other end of the bar.

I’m so dazed that I don’t even realize someone has sat down beside me until I hear laughter. I turn and see Chayse, Emerson, and Cash.

“Hey sis, I think you have some drool right here.” Chayse points to the corner of her mouth as my face instantly heats.

“Oh, leave her alone. You two are just as bad as them. All you ever do is eye fuck each other so I don’t want to hear you giving her shit.”

Chayse quickly quits laughing as her brows furrow and she glances in my direction to see if I thought that was a little more abrasive than is normal for Emerson. I’m even more shocked to see her scowling as she reads over the specials board. I arch an eyebrow towards Chayse in question, but realize she’s frowning again and just shrugs her shoulders. Sensing this was a sister issue, Cash made his way towards the other end of the bar to give us a little space.

“It’s fine, Em. I know Chayse is just teasing me. Is everything okay?” She doesn’t make eye contact with me as she just shrugs her shoulder.

“It’s fine. Things are just a little stressful at the shop right now. Dad is doing pretty good with passing the torch on some things, but he’s being a pain in my ass on others. And the new guy I hired is an awesome mechanic, but his social skills are rather lacking. Add on the fact that it takes forever to get parts now after the pandemic, and I’m just a little off. Sorry guys.”

She’s finally turned toward us, and I can see just how much this is all weighing on her. Sure, she’s the sunshine in our group, but that just makes her cloudy days seem even worse. Knowing there’s not much I can do to help with the new mechanic, I focus on the one problem that I can influence and maybe make better for her.

“How about I talk to dad again. I know he means well, but it’s going to take some reminding that he is stepping back and needs to let you do things your own way. What do you say about telling him it’s a mandatory cookout this weekend? It’s been a minute since we’ve taken over the house.”

“Thanks, Spence. That sounds perfect actually. So, I take it your talk went well with Maverick on your hike this weekend?”

“Yes, it worked out exactly as I had hoped. We haven’t had a chance to spend time together this week, so instead of going home tonight, I decided to surprise him for once and come see him.”

“Well from the way you were basically panting and him staring at you like he was imagining licking you from head to toe, I’d say he’s loving his surprise.”

“Chayse!” Leave it to Chayse to break the remaining tension and get us all laughing. Just as we were calming down, Cash walks over and motions towards a table closer to the stage with some glasses and a pitcher of beer sitting on it.

“Wanna come join us for trivia night?”

Biting my lip, I want to say yes because I love spending time with my sisters, but I also want to talk to Mav more. Noticing my indecision, Cash steps in and stops my worrying.

“It doesn’t actually start for about an hour, but we wanted to take advantage of having a night out and decided to come eat some good food and catch up with Em before we, your sister, turns into an insanely competitive maniac once trivia starts.” We all start laughing because everyone of us has witnessed Chayse’s competitive side. Let’s just say I’ve always felt bad for her opponents. The girl is fierce when she’s in the zone.

“Keep it up, and you won’t be getting any of this the rest of the night.” Chayse runs her hands across her waist and down her thighs as Cash all but turns into a caveman who is about to toss her over her shoulder and walk off with his prize.

“Ugh, cut it out will you. I love you all, but I really don’t need to see any of your sex eyes.”

Just as we all start to laugh, Maverick comes over and sets a plate with three different sliders and sweet potato fries on it. It smells delicious and my stomach grumbles at the delicious food. But before I can dive in, I turn to Maverick and introduce him to Cash.
