She giggles before she launches off the steps into my arms. I squeeze her tight ass and groan because I’m pretty sure she’s trying to kill me by blue balls.

“As glad as I am to see you and have you wrapped around me like this, I don’t think we are ever going to make it to the cookout with the way you’re acting.”

She lets out the sweetest laugh and proceeds to kiss me senseless. She untangles her legs and slides down my front, and now I’m not the only one groaning as she feels how fucking hard I am for her.

“As tempting as that sounds, I am really looking forward to today. I’m glad you’re coming and willing to help me in the kitchen. The girls help, but they get distracted too easily. Plus, I think you and my dad are going to get along great.”

“I’m excited too, Sweets. Let’s go get the groceries so we can get this party started.” I swat her ass as she makes her way to the truck, and we head to the store. It shouldn’t be surprising to me how efficiently Spencer guides us through the store and how quickly we’re done. Sometimes it takes me forever to get through the store because I’m all over the place.

As we pull into her dad’s driveway, my anxiety is starting to come back full force. Spencer must notice because she squeezes my leg before giving me a sweet smile and hopping out of the truck to grab some groceries and head inside. We make it to the kitchen without running into her dad.

“Um, your dad is going to be joining us, right?”

“Yep, he’s just probably out in his shop tinkering on something.” She points out the window that faces the back yard where there’s a large building and I can see the lights on inside.

“If you’re feeling brave, you could head out there and let him know we’re here.”

I can tell she’s testing me from the smirk that she’s trying to hide, so I give her a quick peck and head out the back door. I don’t know much about her dad, Clint, but I do know that he had to be tough as nails to raise these three girls to be as amazing as they all are. I also have only ever heard Spencer talk highly of the man who raised her.

I make it to the door and take a deep breath and let it out. I hate admitting I’m so anxious because that means I care, a lot. It’s obvious that I have strong feelings for Spencer, but if I’m being honest with myself, I still don’t know if I’m ever going to want to get married or have kids. I just don’t know if I can give someone that much power over me. And I know I don’t need to worry about it now because this is so new, but it’s going to have to be something I start thinking about more. The one thing I do know is that I don’t want to lead Spencer on and hurt her.

Shrugging off the anxiety and melancholy my thoughts were heading towards, I square my shoulders and knock on the shop door. It immediately swings open, and I’m met with a handsome man that gives salt and pepper an all new meaning. He’s shorter than I am, but I can tell he’s still very strong. He’s soft around the middle, but he’s still a very attractive man. His face is open and if I’m not mistaken, he looks like he’s trying not to laugh.

“Hello, Sir. My name is Maverick Sanders and I’m dating Spencer.” His handshake is firm, but he doesn’t try breaking my hand. Add in his open smile, and I’m instantly at ease because it reminds me of Spencer’s as soon as I see it.

“Oh, I know who you are and remember you from the store, Mav. I was wondering how much longer you were going to stand at my door before you knocked.” His easy laugh helps me not be completely mortified that he caught me slowly freaking out.

“Um, yeah. I was trying to remember the last time I met someone’s father where I actually cared how the meeting went.” I tug at the back of my neck only giving him part of the truth and instantly realize that I didn’t paint myself in the best light but it’s too fucking late to worry about that now.

As if he can sense my inner turmoil, he claps me on the shoulder and starts walking towards the house. I instantly follow not only because it’s the obvious thing to do, but because Spencer is in the house and being around her will put me at ease.

“Let’s go grab a beer and see what we can help Spence in the kitchen with, and when I say we, I mean you.”

We both laugh at his joke and I’m starting to relax just as we make it in the back door. I stop in my tracks and stare at the beauty that is Spencer working so competently in the kitchen. I knew she was good, but she’s been holding out on me. She’s obviously had some type of training from the way she’s holding her knife and cutting up the vegetables. I’m startled as I hear Clint chuckle beside me.

“Let me just say this, Maverick. If I had any doubts about your intentions with my daughter, seeing you literally stop in your tracks and stare at her as if she hung the moon is a good sense of how you feel about my girl. Just make sure you take care of her, and I mean really pay attention to what she needs and wants. I’m afraid she’s too used to taking care of all of us, she doesn’t know how to sit back and let someone return the favor. But if there was anyone ever who deserved to be adored, it’s her.”

I smile and instead of feeling the pressure and anxiety mount at his words, I have a burning desire to do just what he said. She does deserve to be cared for, but even more than that, she deserves to be worshiped for the amazing woman that she is.

Her dad moves towards the fridge and snags a few beers before making his way around the counter to give his daughter a kiss on the cheek. She looks up a little startled that someone else was in the room and I can’t help but relate to her reaction. More times than I’d like to admit, Olive has walked into my house, taken my food, and walked out right past me and I never even realized she was there because I was so focused on creating my current masterpiece.

Spencer gives her dad a quick hug before turning to me and raising an eyebrow. “Well, aren’t you going to show me how it’s done, mister fancy chef?”

“I don’t know, Sweets. It seems like you may know your way around the kitchen even more than I do.”

“Oh, stop. You know that’s not true. But I did take some cooking classes when I was younger which infinitely made our dinner options a lot better after my mom passed and I decided to take that duty on to help out dad.”

“I’m sorry about your mom, but I hope you were able to find some healing during your cooking journey. I know nothing beats clearing my mind like being in my kitchen.”

“It was the best outlet I could’ve had at that time and gave me a way to cope when I wasn’t in the class learning.”

“And thank the lord for that because I was struggling with my grief and trying to figure out how I was going to handle three girls on my own. I know I relied on Spencer more than I should have, but she and I made a great team on a lot of things, and I don’t think I would’ve made it through losing their mother without all my girls, but especially Spencer.” With that said, he gives her a kiss on her forehead before snagging another beer and heading into the living room to watch a football game.

“So, I see you survived meeting the old man.” She’s trying not to giggle, and I know it’s because she tried to make me believe that it was going to be way worse than it was. I give her a quick smack to her ass before going to the sink and washing my hands to join her.

We fall into an easy rhythm, and I lose all track of time cooking with Spencer. It’s almost as if we have been cooking together for years. As we continue to work on our feast for the day, her sisters, Cash and Penny have all shown up along with Landon and Reid. The atmosphere is a lot louder as it fills with laughter, teasing, and Penny demanding all of our attention.

It’s not long before the doorbell rings and Spencer nudges me to follow her. I’m a little confused until we get to the front door and I see Olive standing there with Patrick. I pull the door open and give my sister a hug before hoisting Pat up into my arms.
